METAL AIRSHIP COMING XING OF SKIESJSCLAIM Proposed Dirigible Swifter, Stronger and Safer, Says Engineer. B.v United Preat CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 24.—A shifter, stronger, safer dirigible, free from the defects which probably caused the R-101 disaster, was described here today. Dr. William Hovgaard, professor of naval design and construction at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and consulting engineer in the projected construction of the MC38—a metal-clad airship expected to herald a happier day in lighter-than-air aviation—told today what may be expected of the new type Zeppelin. Plans for the MC-38 now are In In the making at Detroit. The chief departure of the new craft from the old-style dirigible is the “skin'—an aluminum alloy which will replace the fabric now covering such ships as the Los Angeles. It is this skin which Dr. Hovgaard and other engineers claim will make it possible for the MC-38 to maintain a speed of 100 miles an hour, possibly 125 miles, as compared with a maximum of 80 for other dirigibles. That speed would enable it to transport a 40,000-pound military load from Washington to Panama in twenty-eight hours. With a full military load the airship would have z radius of 2,200 miles, with a half load, 3,600 miles, and with crew only, 4,400 miles. Dr. Hovaard, a member of the Shenandoah disaster board of inquiry, exhibited a strip of the metal which will cover the MC-38. It was 0.018 inches thick and extremely flexible. Being non-porous, it virtually is gas-tight and will not absorb moisture in a rainstorm. The MC-38 will offer no resistance to the passage of electric current from sky to earth, and so the lightning hazard almost will be non-existent. INFLUX OF GOLD WORRYING U. S, Renew Efforts to Stem Flow Into America, By United Preaa WASHINGTON, April 24. A further reduction in the New York federal reserve bank’s rediscount rate is being considered here to check the influx of gold into the United States. United State 6 gold stocks now total $4,719,000,000, according to Thursday’s federal reserve report. This is more than 40 per cent of the world’s supply. Within a few days, foreign vessels will bring in $31,000,000 more from France and Argentina. Announcement of the new French shipment caused renewal of efforts to stem the flood, which is draining the world and is believed likely to affect adversely the gold standard in some countries.
