PROBERS STUDY CHICAGO COPS' BANK DEPOSITS Subpenas Are Served for Financial Houses’ Records in Crime Quiz. By Unitrd fret.* . CHICAGO, April 20.—Investigation of police department corruption charges was carried to a new battlefront today as the records of the Sank accounts of seventeen police fcaptains were sought by the states attorney’s office. Subpoenas demanding that these bank records be submitted immediately to a special grand Jury were ordered served on loop bankers and financial house managers. More than 200 banks in Chicago and Cook county were ordered to produce records of their policemen depositors. ’ Evidence for Grand Jury Evidence found of undue wealth will bring the officials involved before the grand jury, the state’s attorney Indicated. In explaining this move, Charles J. Mueller, assistant states attorney, said the special grand jury demanded evidence to bear out charges that “the police are in a corrupt alliance with the criminals of Chicago.” Mueller said the records would be given to the federal government to aid its fight against organized crime, should the evidence disclosed warrant federal consideration. Wiping Oct the Gangs Federal prosecution of gangsters and politicians by George E. Q. Johnson, United States district attorney, have resulted in the conviction of six gangsters and two politicians on charges of income tax fraud. Evidence of great wealth in the records of the police officials may furnish a basis for tax fraud prosecution it was said. In a nation-wide radio speech Sunday night, Johnson prophesied that visitors to the Chicago world's fair in 1933 would find this “a city that has wiped out all its gangs.” SAVED BY TRANSFUSION WITH HIS OWN BLOOD Aut6 Victim Is Aided in Remarkable Operation in West. By 'Science Service SAN FRANCISCO, April 20— An auto victim’s life has been saved by transfusion with his own blood, Dr. A. Lincoln Brown and Dr. Martin Warren Debenham of the University of California medical school here have just reported to the American Medical Association. The blood was removed from the patient’s chest, where it had seeped from a cut blood vessel. It was filtered and pumped back into the vein of his right arm, just as in any ordinary transfusion, only in this case no outside donors were needed. The patient’s own blood, loss of wh'ch was killing him, was reclaimed and used to restore him to life. The patient is described as “G. K., a white man, aged 42.” “We do not consider it true surgery to withdraw good blood and throw it away,” Drs. Brown and Debenham commented.
