OPEN CAMPAIGN TO MAKE SNELL NEXTSPEAKER Republican House Fight Is Promising to Be Free-for-AII. By Bcrippt-Howard Xev>papcr A.lUonee WASHINGTON, April 17.—The fight for the Republican nomination for the speakership today promised to be a free-for-all with the disclosure that active campaigning has begun in behalf of Representative Bertrand H. Snell of New York. Snell, chairman of the house rules committee, is expected to have the support of at least nineteen of New York’s twenty Republican congressmen. The only doubtful one 1* Fiorello H. La Guardis, who is determined that the next Speaker will be pledged to liberalization of rules and legislative policies. TOaon Faces Fight Snell, majority leader John Q. Til son and the late Speaker Longworth dominated the house legislative program. It was thought for a few days following Longworth’s death that Snell would support Tilson to insure solidarity among eastern Republicans. But Snell and his friends are refusing to recognize Tilson's alleged inherent right to the speakership. Snell, it is reported, will have the support of Representtive Isaac Bachrach of New Jersey, Intimate friend and campaign manager for Longworth in his contests in the house. The activity in behalf of the conservative Snell will spur other candidates into immediate action. Tilson, when he was in Washington a few days ago, indicated he would do nothing until next fall. Britten Is Advocated Meanwhile, from Chicago come reports that Illinois Republicans are advocating Representative Fred Britten, chairman of the naval affairs committee and one time amateur boxing champion of the United States. Indiana Republicans favor Representative Will R. Wood, chairman of the appropriations committee. Western Republicans are talking about Representatives C. William Ramaeyer of lowa, Homer Hoch of Kansas and Burton L. French of Idaho. While Republicans are fighting among themselves Representative John N. Gamer, Texas, Democratic nominee, has no opposition within his party. TREASURY GIVES NOTICE Secretary States Notes Redeemable In March No Longer Bear Interest.
