ZIE6FELD PICKS ONLY 2 GIRLS IN TRYOUT OF 400 Complains Bitterly About General Lack of Beauty in Woman. By United Press NEW YORK. April 17.—Florenz Ziegfeld, In quest of some girls to glorify In the forthcoming twentyfirst edition of his Follies, sat in the front row of the Ziegfeld theater and complained bitterly about the general lack of beauty In women. Four hundred girls—blondes and brunettes, bow-legged and knockkneed, fat and skinny, beautiful and ugly, young and old —paraded on the stage, each desirous of becoming the apple of the master's eye. Ziegfeld need forty show girls and sixty dancers for the new Follies, but all he got out of the procession Thursday was two dancers. “And I want it understood,’’ he explained, “that I didn't pick these two for their good looks. They just happened to be fine dancers." The 400 girls strutted about the stage, smiling their prettiest smiles. To an untrained eye, most of them seemed to be sufficiently good looking to attract comment on the street or in a subway train. But

BEAUTY SCHOOL TO START THURSDAY
International Expert Will Conduct Classes for The Times. “Screen stars are not blessed with more of nature’s goods than other women, but they do know how to use cosmetics to enhance what nature gave them. Every woman, young or old, can have the individuality of the screen star." So speaks V. E. Meadows, International authority on beauty, who comes to Indianapolis next week under auspices of The Times for a three-day stay to tell women of Indianapolis how to enhance their beauty. On the subject of beauty Meadows speaks with .authority. Today he stands as one of the w’orld’s greatest cosmetic stylists. Leading screen stars have learned the art of makeup from him. He has been consulting cosmetician to the Pathe, Paramount, Warner Brothers, First National and United Artists studios. It was he who conceived the idea of cosmetic styling and to IndianZiegfeld could scarcely restrain his disgust. He descended, in fact, to Elizabethan phraseology to express his intense irritation. “It makes no difference to me," Ziegfeld said, “whether they’re blondes or brunettes. What I want is a girl who stands five foot seven and Who is both svelte and curvy. I like girls with curves.”

CHICAGO, April 17.— Ruth S., Gordon, 25, talented foster daughter of a wealthy family, fell or leaped from the twenty-first floor of the Allerton house, Gold Coast hotel, early today, and was killed.
