ROCKNECRASH REVIVES TALK ON 'CHUTE USE Doubt Practicability of Air ‘Life Preservers’ in Transport Planes. By Scrippt.Howard Sewipaper Alliance Washington, April 10.—The recent airplane crash in which Knute Rockne and seven others were killed has revived discussion over the use of “life preservers” on passenger airliners. The only known forms of aerial life preservers are the individual parachute and the experimental planechute, in which the entire plane floats down attached to a gigantic parachute. There is no passenger airline in America today that equips its passengers with parachutes. Both the airlines and the Department of Commerce consider the use of individual chutes on transport planes inadvisable, and the planechute has not yet been sufficiently developed for practical use. Psychology Bad There is little likelihood of the government requiring the use of life preservers on air transport lines until something new in the parachute line is developed. Airlines give several reasons for not providing passengers with parachutes. They have found the psychological effect bad, tending to frighten passengers rather than reassure them. Accidents in the air, when they do occur, happen so quickly that there would be slight chance of unloading a large transport plane carrrying from ten to thirty passengers. No Use In Rockne Crash Aged persons and small children, both of whom ride the airlines, could not be expected to jump into space and successfully operate their parachutes. There is not room In present type transport planes for each passen-

Miss Mary Myers, 17-year-old University of Georgia freshman, was born in Honduras, where her father was stationed in the consular service. But that didn’t prevent her fel-low-students from judging her the most beautiful girl in the university, for her parents were native Georgians. ‘NEW’ HAIR EACH DAY LONDON, April 10. Woman’s love of change and variety has given birth of anew hair-dyeing device, which enables a daily dyeing of hair, each day a different color. The machine, on exhibition at the Hairdressers’ exhibition, displayed its abilities on numerous women. It can dye the blackest hair a blonde stage, or vice versa, or can change hair to any intermediate stage. ger to wear a bunglesome ’chute, weighing about thirty pounds. Records of fatal crashes on air transport lines show that in onlyone or two instances, both of them doubtful, would parachutes have saved the passengers. They certainly would have saved no one in the Rockne crash. Wearing of parachutes is compulsory in the army and navy, but most of this flying is done in open cockpit planes, which afford easy egress, and the fliers are trained and disciplined in the use of ’chutes.
