Bui nlted t‘rr*n WASHINGTON, April 8.- European and oriental countries and political units in the South Pacific have followed the lead of the United States by countering with tariff increases in the ten months since the Hawley-Smoot act raising duties on American imports became effective. Sixteen European nations and thirteen countries and political units in the Far East and South Pacific have raised the tariff wall higher against many leading commodities produced or manufactured in this country and sold in foreign markets. Some of these tariff increases, as in the case of South American countries, generally have been interpreted as retaliatory to increases made by the United States on products those countries send here. Decrease In United Slates Sales Sixteen South American countries have raised their tariff rates since President Herbert Hoover signed the Hawley-Smoot act, making a total of forty-five countries and political units altogether which have boosted their rates. A decrease of nearly half a billion dollars in United States sales to Europe occurred in the eight months beginning last July 1 through February, this year, as compared with the corresponding period of the year before, liie tariff went into effect last June 17. The drop totaled $401,119,897. Exports for the eight months ending in February were valued at $1,136,298,255. For the comparable eight months in the previous year, they were $1,597,418,152. Oriental Business Down There has been a comparable decrease in trade with Oriental and South Pacific countries. European countries which have boosted tariff rates are Austria, Belgium, Esthonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal and Yugoslavia. Eastern countries and political units which have raised their rates are China, Japan, Siam, Dutch East Indies, British India, Egypt, Syria. Federated Malay States, British New Guinea, Hongkong, Australia, New Zealand and the Cook islands. An Indian cemetery, believed to date back before the Spanish conquest of Chile, has been found by workers in Chile.
