BLAME BROKEN PROPELLER FOR ROCKNE CRASH Mystery of Plane Crash Is Cleared Up by Statement of U. S. Probers. By United I'rr- > WASHINGTON. April 3.—Mystery fiurounding the plane crash that k lied Knute RocKne, Notre Dame football coach, and seven others Tuesday m Kansas, has been cleared up Dy the commerce department, With the announcement that a broken propeller was responsible. Amateur detectives among the department’s aviation experts put two and two together and made fie, basing then' investigation on reports that ice had collected on a

wing of the. plane. They discovered that while the safety nut which holds the propeller in place was still in po.-il.on after the wreck, the hub was missing. It would be impossible to remove the hub without first removing the nut, they explained, unless the hub vr.s broken. The. then deduced that, since ice hau lonned on the whig, it was rs a liable to assume it had also formed on the hub. The report added that “it is possible that a substantal piece of ice nicy have broken loose from the hub and been struck by one of the propeller blades, resulting in a breakage of the blade.'’ Such a breakage would cause a 6tress of fifty tons, they said, sufficient to break a wing. A’most simultaneously with the snapping of the wing, it was reasoned. th" hub broke, releasing the other two blades of the propeller. AUTOS STOLEN BY GANG Marion Boys Blamed for Theft of More Than Twenty. Vu Timrn Special MARION, Ind„ April 3—Theft of more than twenty automobiles here during the last few weeks is said by police officers to have been solved with the arrest of Wayne Elliott, 17, Marion high school student. Elliott was the leader of a gang, officers said, which has been stealing cars for joyrides, later abandoning the cars after wrecking or damaging them. Three alleged companions of Elliott w’ere turned over to juvenile authorities. An affidavit charging Elliott with vehicle taking has been filed in the Grant superior court by Prosecutor Harley Hardin.
