FLOOD WATERS RECEDE;6 DEAD IN NORTHWEST Property loss From Storm May Mount to Several Million Dollars. By United Preen PORTLAND. Ore., April 2. Flood waters of the Pacific northwest receded today, leaving a toll of six dead, property losses that may mount into the millions and, in at least one place, the menace of a water shortage. With the crest of the unprecedented storms past, dwellers in cities and counties concentrated on restoring communication and transportation facilities, and obtaining food supplies, A more serious problem was present in Walla Walla. Wash., where officials announced that water mains had been washed out and only one day's supply of water remained In the city’s twin reservoirs. An effort may be made to connect the lines with Ragcu stream, but it was feared the muddy waters would prove a public health menace. Estimates of property losses continued to rise, with the possibility that they may total $2,000,000. Merchants reported huge stocks were flooded, and two bridges costing $20,000 each were washed out. All the deaths were from drowning. Airplanes were dispatched from Portland to carry bread to the Dalles and Tillamook. Returning pilots reported a dozen places along the Columbia highway where slides and washouts had blocked the road Another report said the worst blizzard of the year had struck a government camp and raged unabated throughout the night. Tests by scientists have indicated that a bee’s eyes are only about 1 per cent as efficient as a human being’s.
