SPRING IS HERE; SACK OF MAIL MAN HEAVIER Advertising Bulk and Type Attest Summer Is Drawing Near. BY ARCH STEINEL Spring’s waning! It’s “sprung" in all Its advertising glory, as may be attested to by postmen and railway mail clerks of Indianapolis and the state as they work through the deluge of “back-fco-nature’’ literature that burden the malls. For lives there a man or woman within the environs of Marion county who hasn't received some springtime pamphlets on some nostrum, some book, with a letter that runs thus: “Dear Friend—By acting quickly we have Just secured a wonderful springtime gift for a few of our friends. We’re only notifying a small group.” Are You a Member? Well, If you’re a member of that “select clientele” and a sappy spring hasn’t said, “I will arise” to you, then read on so you can be a “sun-shine-leaper.” How'B this for bringing on the sulphur and molasses as turned out by one form letter: “The season will soon be here when we feci like leaping and dancing In the sunshine, flowers will be up (now, take a peony, for Instance, who wouldn’t thrill to a peony pining to lift iis head?), birds winging north, trees bursting into leaf. (Have you ever attended a first-class treeburst?). Scon butterflies will be sunning themselves on the fence posts beside th road. Poor butterfly, and only a fence post to sun his little self on!” Fishing in Sink By this time you’re cither ready to go fishing in the kitchen-sink or Imagine in your stupor that the chaise lounge is a grassy meadow. But listen here’s the gift of the Gods as presented to you in the letter, it’s something that unpadlocks every bird-nest, swings wide the hinges of every Hoosier dell, as the leter says, “The present I want to make you is two pocket guides that enable you to recognize and Identify ail the flowers and biras that you see!” Just think of it! Just think how wonderful it will be to know a crow from a buzzard and why the pigeons of Soldiers and. Sailors monument like the monument. ' For the letter clearly says: “These superb volumes await to unfold nature’s secrets to you. You don’t have to bathe in dragon’s blood, like Siegfried, to learn the language of birds. You don’t have to listen like Mahomet to a pigeon whispering in your ear.” Oh! to bathe in dragon’s blood. Oh! to know the language of the birds and to be able to discuss the depression, and your newest bunion with a bluejay. Oh! Spring, why weren’t you “sprung” before.
