LIVES ARE LOST BY TWO YOUTHS UNDER TRAIN Speeding Auto Skids and Turns Over in Front of Freight. Two youths were killed Wednesday night when their auto was struck by a freight train and four other persons were injured seriously in traffic accidents in and near the city. The dead are Basil Shumaker, 17, of 330 North Lynhurst drive, and Walter Saunders, _ Jr., 20, 5340 West Washington street. The youths’ car ap%J\_J proached the Big Four railroad crossing ~* at Lynhurst drive at a high rate of speed, witnesses said. Swerving when Shumaker saw the train the car skidded and turned cm to front of the freight train. Bodies of the youths were mangled beyond recognition and the car was ground to bits. The bodies were carried about half a mile by the train. En Route to Work Shumaker was en route to work in a plating plant on South Senate avenue, and Saunders was accompanying the youth in search for work. Death of the two youths l posted the Indianapolis traffic toll to thirty-eight since Jan. 1. Three persons were injured seriously early today when the car in which they were riding, crashed head-on with a cattle truck south of Southport on Madison road. The injured are Thurman Carter, 32, broken jaw and scalp wounds; Luther Britton, 23, fractured skull, and his wife, Mildred, 20, bruises and head lacerations. All are said to be from Greenville, Term., and were en route to Tennessee from Ohio. Auto is Demolished The car bore no identification card or license plates. The truck was driven by Lawrence Nichols, of Summershade, Ky„ accompanied by his brother, Carl. Deputy sheriffs were told that the auto in which the injured persons were riding swerved directly in front of the truck. The auto was demolished. Clothing and other luggage in the car was strewn 100 yards along the highway. PERMISSION ASKED FOR REDUCING GAS RATES Michigan City and New Carlisle Would Be Affected by Cuts. Gas rate reductions for patrons of the Northern Indiana Public Service Company in Michigan City, Long Beach, Ogden, New Carlisle and adjacent territory will mean a saving of $24,000 a year, it was estimated by counsel for the company In asking permission of the Indiana public service commission to make the reductions. Morse Dellplain, president of the company, announces the cheaper gas will be of higher heating value as a supply being obtained from Calumet region oil refineries is being mixed with the coke oven product. The company has filed two other petitions with the commission to permit revision of electric rates for summer cottage residents at Lake James, Crooked Lake end Bass Lake. NegTo Youth Seriously Hurt Harold Huffman, Negro, 18, of 730 Indiana avenue, is in serious condition at city hospital today as a result of an accident Wednesday night in which he was struck by an auto driven by Sam Works, Negro, 45, of 2441 PariS avenue. The accident occurred at California street and Indiana avenue.

For the last three days, Martin Love, alias Dore and Dove, of Danville, Va., has been ‘’burning up the burg,” passing out traveler’s checks, for which he received change and often generously left the change to his creditors. With Dove, police early today arrested Robert Baker, 31, of Cincinnati and Carl Wright, 35, Apartment 1, 243 East Eleventh street, who admitted they had been on parties with Dove and had aided him in strewing the checks here and there. The checks had been issued by the Mellon National bank, Pittsburgh, of which Andrew Mellon, secretary of treasury, is the head. Frederick Morrison, 24, and Gary Moistner, 37, both living here, are under sentence of two years in the state reformatory and five years in the state prison, respectively, on pleas of guilty to a charge of second degree burglary made before Judge John H. Morris. The men. committed a number of store robberies in Henry county. Ex-Convict Faces Trial MARION, Ind., March 26.—Jerry Tull, 32, Negro ex-convict, is being held in the Grant county jail pending arraignment in superior court on a charge of vehicle taking. Tull was arrested here Sunday night by Police Sergeant Tony Hennigan after an automobile chase through the outskirts of the city. He is said to have confessed.

CONFESSION IS ALLEGED An alleged confession admitting the holdup of the Colonial theater on March 19 and the theft of slls from the cashier was obtained today from Harry Singleton. 19, of Kirkland, Ind. Singleton, according to City Detectives Claude Johnson and John Gaughn, admitted that he held up Miss Edith Trexler, ticket-window cashier of the theater.
