SPEEDING CITY AUTO DRIVERS SLOW TRAFFIC 45-Mile'an-Hour Pilots as Much to Blame as 10-Mile Group. Ej/ Science Service WASHINGTON, March 26—If you drive through city traffic at forty-five miles an hour you slow up traffic as much as though you drive at less than ten miles an hour. This is shown in data presented by the traffic committee to the City Officials’ Division of the American Road Builders’ Association. They have found that' a speed limit of twenty-three and one-half miles an hour will allow the greatest number of cars an hour on the streets. Traffic-studies show that the theoretical capacity of a single lane of moving vehicles varies with the speed of the cars, but that at higher speeds motorists must keep more distance between their vehicles. This cuts down the number of cars which the street can accommodate. If cars, with an average length of fourteonjeet, travel at five miles an hour, they need keep only five feet apart, and 1,380 can pass a given point in an hour. If they run at 10 miles an hour, the distance between must be increased to eleven feet, but the number of cars an hour is 2.100. ’lhe number of ears an hour on the street Increases with the speed, but the distance between the automobiles required for safe driving increases also. At first the necessary space be; eon modern cars equipped with four-wheel brakes increase: only slightly with their r.peccl, but about twenty-three and one-half mile an hour the effect of the factor' of safety of pace between begins to affect the number of cars which the street can handle. At that speed, 2,600 cars an hour is the capacity of the traffic lane. At. speeds higher than twentythree and one-half mil*' an hour, the safe distance between cars cuts down very sharply the number of cars per hour, and at forty-five miles an hour the street can acoommodale only 1.760, just about 'he number that can be managed the almost impossible velocity of seven miles an hour. INJUNCTION AGAINST PRfSON SHIRTS ASKED Manufacturers Take Action to Stop Trustees’ Distribution. Injunction against the commercial distribution of prison-made shirts is asked in a suit filed against trustees of the Indiana state prison in superior court one today, by Lewis Meier X Cos., manufacturers of workmen’s clothing. Michael E. Foley, Jess C. Andrew, Arthur L. Denlston and John L. Moorman, prison trustees, are defendants. Averring that sale of the shirts “to other than state institutions” is a violation of statutes, the Meier company asks that trustees be prohibited from continuing the alleged sale as a commercial enterprise. Only 52 Rackets Now Running CHICAGO. March 26.—There are only fifty-three active rackets now in Chicago, as compared to ninetytwo in September, 1928, the Employers’ Association reports.
