What’s in Fashion?
Cheerful Breakfast Nooks Directti By AMOS PARRISH
Informal Maple Furniture in a Modern Breakfast Nook
NEW YORK, March 19.—Everybody knows the value of starting the day off pleasantly and cheerfully. And that’s one good reason for the fast growing fashion of gay breakfast nooks in homes. Even apartment house builders are recognizing this fashion and partitioning off a corner of the kitchen for this purpose. Breakfast is an informal meal, of course. Somebody's always in a hurry. No time to stand on ceremony. So—because it’s in harmony with the meal—informal looking furniture is found in breakfast nooks in fashion-knowing homes. Two Types Good Two kinds of furniture are in fashion, both informal in character. One is the simple, sturdy maple furniture that looks like that used in American Colonial days. A butterfly table and ladder back chairs, such as are illustrated. The other is the gay painted furniture, still with more or less Colonial lines. A drop leaf table and Windsor chairs, or just small, straight chairs of simple lines. And their color chosen to harmonize with the rest of the kitchen. Os course the whole color scheme of the fashionable breakfast nook is planned to harmonize with the rest of the kitchen, because it is a part of the kitchen. Yellow and Green Good The two most fashionable color schemes for k st ?hens right now are yellow with green and blue with cream. So that makes them the most fashionable for breakfast nooks, too. But—because the breakfast nook is really a separate unit, it can have greater ini'—-"v of color and more interest in decorative effects. For instance —if you’ve a yellow and green kitchen and you’re a bit daring, here’s a breakfast nook color scheme that will keep you cheerful lor every one of at least 365 breakfasts. Walls are yellow' in both kitchen and nook. This yellow is repeated

In the window cornice board shown in the sketch above. But, the edge of the cornice introduces anew color—a real lacquer red. Not crimson or scarlet, but that lovely orangered. The overdrapes are lacquer red chintz with tiny yellow flowers. So are the chair pads. And the edging of both draperies and pads are finished with a fluted ruffle of plain yellow glazed chintz. Glass curtains are white marquisette with a yellow dot. If the idea of lacquer red seems too daring for you, substitute a green chintz with a tiny orange flower and edge it with plain orange. And for glass curtains, try plain yellow ones. And here’s a good scheme based on blue and cream. Furniture in soft French blue. Cream walls. At the windows, peach colored organdie bound in French blue. With overdrapes of chintz in peach, cream and blue. Os course if your breakfast nook has built-in seats and tables, as so many do, then you simply paint them in the wanted color, or stain them maple. Copyright, 1931. by Amos Parrish. FAKE LISTS OF VETERAN LOANS ARE SOLD HERE Car Dealers Buy False Information: Officials Begin Probe. Government officials in Indianapolis today were perusing evidence obtained against several persons on the sale of fraudulent lists of World war veterans purported to be receiving government loans on adjusted compensation certificates.
