RABIES SPREADS IN CITY; ISSUE ir CAUTION PLEA Epidemic Branded Worst in History of State by Dr. King. Indianapolis and Marion county arc in the midst of a rabies epidemic which is the worst in the history of the state health department, Dr. William F. King, state health director, declared today. Os sixty-seven person being given rabies anti-toxin treatments, fifty cases are from Marion county. Dr. King urged more rigid enforcement of the quarantine by all local peace officers. Under the quarantine rule, dogs may be shot when permitted to roam at large. A single dog belonging to Frank Crafton, R. R. 4, Box 219, caused twenty-two persons to come to the state health board laboratory for treatment. The dog had bitten seven other dogs in the neighborhood. Examination of the dead head disclosed many rabid bodies, according to Dr. King. The dog had run at large throughout the neighborhood near Troy avenue. Patrolmen Walter Ferguson and Roy Reeves of the Indianapolis police department were among those taking treatments today. They had been called to shoot a rabid dog at the home of Thomas Carrr, 130 Gladstone avenue. The dog had bitten Mr. and Mrs. Carr and a boy named Eugene Steirs, ail of whom reported for treatment. Os today’s cases five were from Martinsville and four froi ..uncie.
YOUTH IS FREED ON AUTO DEATH CHARGE llenry Haynes, 21, Discharged on Order of Judge Paul Wetter. One of many motorists against whom manslaughter charges are pending as the result of frequent fatal accidents in the city during the last month, Henry Haynes, 21, of 131 North Elder street, was dis-> charged in municipal court four today. Coroner Fred Veliling recommended that Haynes be held for Marion county grand jury, but Judge Paul C. Wetter said no evidence was produced to warrant such action. Witnesses absolved Haynes of blame for the death of Miss Dolores Major, 37, Evansville, who stepped in front of his auto at Massachusetts avenue and Michigan street, Feb. 21. PLAN PROTECTION AT FAIRGROUND STAND Fire, Police Provisions Discussed by City, State Officers. Plans for police and fire protection at the new grand stand to be erected at the state fairground were discussed today by city and state officials. The old stand now is being razed to make way for the concrete stand with a capacity of 12,000 persons. John A. Deery, architect, and E. J. Barker, secretary-treasurer of the state board of agriculture, said construction of the new stand will be started April 1. c y r usTeatonissa v e and Case Involves Transfer of $45,000,000 in Cash, Stocks, Securities. Safe Plane Predicted CHICAGO, March 18.—An airplant that is “fool-proof" eventually will be built, believes Casey Jones, who has been flying planes since 1911 and has won many air races. “But,” Jones added in an address to 500 members of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, “there never will be an engineer smart enough to build a plane that is damn-fool-proof.” Jones, who is vice-president of the Curtiss-Wright Corporation of New York, said flying is a matter of "reasonable safety rather than comparative safety.” Beacon Is Sighted Sighting of the new Merchants Bank building air beacon from a distance of fifty miles when flying at an altitude of 1,500 feet, was reported Tuesday night by Rex Harker, air mail pilot, Embry - Riddle division, American Airways, Inc. It would be visible 100 miles or more to a plane 5,000 feet high, Harker declared.
