BAKER ASSAILS fOUCE FAILURE IN BOOZE CASE Alcohol Missing at Trial; Cops Are Branded ‘lncompetent.’ * Branding inability of policemen to produce evidence in criminal court in a recent liquor case an "inexcusable failure,” Judge Frank P. Baker today addressed letters to police heads, asserting he personally would lay facts in the* case before them. Baker referred to the trial last week of William Harrington, 227 South Grace street, who was acquitted on a charge of transporting liquor after officers said they could not produce evidence, declaring it had been destroyed. According to testimony, three officers pursued Harrington at 05 miles an hour last April and alleged they found a can of alcohol in his auto. Alcohol Is Missing In court, however, they could not produce the alleged alcohol and could not testify whether it was "grain, sugar or wood alcohol, used in radiators." Baker had asserted the officers apparently were incompetent. He addressed his letters to Police Chief Jerry Kinney and the safety board He said, in part: “I have found so many things to admire in the police department, as now constituted, that I regret very much the necessity of calling your attention to v. hat seems to be an inexcusable failure on the part of the officers ' to obtain evidence for conviction in a case recently tried in this court. “The trial judge, Eral R. Cox, joins me in this letter. Cameron Order Claimed "I am writing this so you may make such investigation as you think proper in this matter. I am ' sending a copy of this letter to the safety board and will see you In person to lay all the facts before you.” Officers in the case were Jacob Hudgins. Alex Dumvoodie and Dalin Judd. They testified the liquor had hecn destroyed on order of Municipal Judge Clifton R. Cameron. Copy ,o ftheir testimony was sent Kinney by Baker. Cameron did not admit ordering destruction, but. sal dit "might have happened by accident.” Births Boys Harry and Zella Armstrong, Coleman hospital. . Fred and Daisy Flowers, Coloman hospital. March 17.—Dr. Edwin Reynolds is confident that sooner or later the men who stole his automobile and stripped it of its accessories will be found, probably in a pesthouse. Along with the accessories, the thieves took several phials that were in the car. Two of these contained enough smallpox and typhoid germs, Dr. Reynolds said, "to start an epidemic.” Legal Notices HUDSON COACH, 1926 Motor No. 219585.
