HUNT VANISHED SPY WHO STOLE KAISEH CODE Parents Ask for Aid in Search for Famous WcT Sleuth. ’By United Press PARIS, March 13.—Mr. and Mrs. Joseph T. Szek have appealed to : *he French, British and Belgian governments to help hnd their son, Alexander Szek, who, in 1915, had his fleet moment of fame as the '.uper-spy who obtained the German secret diplomatic code in Brussels, secreted it past the electrified frontier into Holland, then disappeared. The elder Szelc is convinced his son is still alive, either trying to live down his spy past or as a prisoner in the hands of his former employers. Five years ago the parents received a letter in their son’s handwriting, with a British date line but a Cannes, France, postmark. Stole Kaiser’s Code Szek, 20, son of an Austrian, but born in the suburbs of London, was an engineer when the war broke out. He and his father had perfected one of the first wireless receiving sets which could be maneuvered to receive on any wave length. The Germans heard of the youth’s skill. After the German army advanced into Belgium, the boy was drafted and assigned to operate the German wireless station in Brussels. On that duty, he had occasion to furnish the kaiser, at Spa, with a Copy of the code which was transmitted for secrecy in Arab. The boy, with his knowledge of oriental language, deciphered the principal keys of the code and for several days copied as much as he could and memorized more. On Aug. 14, 1915, after being refused aid by the American legation in his attempt to get out of the country, he met a Brittsh-Belgian spy, Madame Gille. Started on Bicycles Through the woman, he met another spy, De Bok, who made up false papers for Szek and furnished him with a letter to Major Oppenheim, agent of the British intelligence service at the Hague. Szek and De Bok started for the frontier on bicycles. The frontier between Belgium and Holland was strung with high-cur-rent electric wires. The boys carried with them a tube of their own making which permitted them to oass without danger of being killed. The contraption was a wooden tube, insulated with old bicycle tires, ft was placed between the bottom wire and the ground and the boys crawled through and reached The Hague next day. The secret German code W’as in England two days later, but there never was further trace of Szek. The boy disappeared as though into thin air a. few hours after delivering the secret code. De Bok later received SI,OOO from the British intelligence service for his part. PLATINUM TRADE LARGE U. S. I* World’s Largest User of I Precious Metal, Bit United Press NEW YORK. March 13.—The ! WAGONER, United Press Staff Correspondent HOLLYWOOD, March 13.—Walter (Death Valley) Scott has “gone society” and intends to give Hollywood as big a thrill as he gave the nation in 1905 when he traveled In a special train from Los Angeles to Chicago and threw silver dollars to crowds along the way. The federal government, according to a statement bv Scotty, has some young surveyors “messing around” his $2,000,000 mansion in Death Valley, and he intends to play around in Hollywood until he finds out what the surveyors are “up to.” Rents Elaborate Apartment Scotty said that the government plans to build a national park in Death Valley, which, if true, would interfere with the Scott idea of privacy. “Think I’m going to live in the middle of a national park after bucking the desert all these years?” asked Scotty. “Not me. “The tourists would be feeding me like they do those bears in Yellowstone. “I’m going to be one of the social lights of this town until Uncle Sam decides what is what with my land.” Scotty explained he had rented an elaborate apartment in Hollywood and a suite in a downtown hotel In Los Angeles. DEBT OWED TO ANCIENTGREECE Nearly Million English Words Are Derivatives. By United Press SPRINGFIELD, HI., March 13. The debt of the English language to that of ancient Greece is shown in a book recently completed by Dr. Percy W. Long of this city. The book entitled “The Greek Element in the English Language” was begun by Dr. John Convers Smock, former state geologist of New Jersey, at the beginning of the present century. Upon his death six years ago Dr. Long took over the work. The book contains 130,000 words in which there is some Greek element. But Dr. Long points out that in all there are nearly a million English words derived in part or in whole from the Greek. These are chiefly in the language of botany, medicine, archeology, the church, philosophy, mineralogy, physics, music, zoology and chemistry. Chemistry alone has 400,000 words containing Greek elements, Long says. Tile chief purpose of the book is to provide initiators of scientific and other specialist nomenclature with a reference list indicating what Greek terms already have been used, in what fields, and how. that,” he warned. “Nope, I’ve bought a couple of tuxedos, but no high hats or berets for Scotty. My ten gallon hat will do for day and evening and I wear my scarlet tie with any outfit, no matter what the book of etiquette says. “Jewelry? Nothing doing. I let the ladies wear that. I was out with one the other night who wore $14,000 worth of diamonds.” Death Valley Scotty first became prominent in 1905 when he announced he had an unlimited gold cache in Death Valley. He took a special train from Los Angeles to Chicago in 44 hours 54 minutes, a record which still stands. Every time the train stopped, Scotty tossed money from the observation platform. A few years ago he started building his castle in Death Valley. He admitted A. M. Johnson, Chicago multimillionaire, was his partner, and the myth of Scotty’s mystery mine was blasted.

EXILES EXPECT EARLY FALL OF CUBANRECIME Machado Between Devil of Debt, Blue Sea of Army Expenses, They Say. By Scripps-Hoicard Eetespaper Allianct WASHINGTON, March 13. Cuban exiles here state the regime of President Machado is between the devil of debt and the deep sea of army costs and so are predicting its early collapse. Officials of the Cuban Patriotic League, which maintains headquarters here, were’expecting something to happen on March 7 on which date a $20,000,000 loan became due. An extension was granted by New York bankers, however, and trouble averted. Nevertheless, league members assert, the Cuban national debt is such that an early crisis is unavoidable unless President Machado can make drastic cuts in expenses. The only place where any very substantial savings can be made, they say, is by reducing army and police establishments, and if that- is done Machado’s opposition will oust him from power. The exiles’ information bureau here states that Cuba’s national debt is around $258,000,000. Interest and amortization during 1931, therefore, was put at $31,650,000, or more than half of the republic’s total revenue of $60,000,000. As military and police expenditures call for another $20,000,000 for the year, only a little more than $8,000,000 remains for all the other functions of government such as education, justice, public works and so on. Cuba is passing through the worst economic crisis in her history. Sugar’s collapse brought a whole train of ills, including reduced income from taxes which, the bureau

WINS FAME BY SONG AT SHOW Girl Crooning in Audience Now Has Radio Post. By United Press ATLANTA, Ga., March 13.—A novelist might strike upon some such situation in a fight of fancy, but it really happened here. Organist of an Atlanta motion picture theater was booming away on one of those programs where all hands are invited to sing. Suddenly he reversed the situation entirely, and offered a megaphone to any member of the audience who might care to proffer a bit of impromptu song. Without a trace of backwardness, Miss Sylvia Smullian, a seer .ry of an Atlanta firm, walked uown front, took the magephone, and crooned: “I Still Get a Thrill Thinking of You.” The audience rattled the roof, for It was sung like a veteran. Miss Smullian responded with an encore. Manager of the theater arranged
