CLEVER COOKS USE SUGAR TO SEASON FOOD Improves the Taste-appeal and Increases Nourishment of the Dish There is no need to deny yourself flavor when you eat essential foods. According to leading nutritional authorities and dietitians, the use of sugar to season vegetables, meat dishes and fruits is entirely proper. Sugar adds zest to essential foods which carry vitamins, mineral salts and roughage. It heightens the “taste” of peas, beans, spinach and other vegetables. It improves the flavor of meat stews and makes them more palatable. In the. case of fresh fruits, sugar modifies harsh acids. In.vegetable and meat cookery, a dash of sugar to a pinch of salt is a popular rule of clever cooks. The great value of seasoning and flavoring foods with sugar is that it makes them more enjoyable. Too often essential foods are rejected, especially by children, because they are not pleasing to the taste. Most foods are more delicious with sugar. The Sugar Institute. —Advertisement.

Just Every Day Sense
BY MRS. WALTER FERGUSON
IT was mere chance that permitted me to listen during the course of one day to two fathers. The first proudly was proclaiming the election of his son to Phi Beta Kappa. He enlarged upon his subject at length, and vowed that he always had given the utmost care to the rearing of the lad and that brains naturally ran in his family. The second man bitterly was bewailing the wildness of his heir. The boy was getting entirely out of hand and seemed dally to behave in a more reprehensible manner. And this parent, strangely, did not blame himself at all, but made the usual excuse. “Ive always told my wife,” he said, “that she would ruin the boy with indulgence. She never could deny him a thing. But you know how women are. They’ll never listen to reason.” HUM WHEN it comes to this particular subject, men are the most irrational and inconsistent creatures alive. I feel certain it is not an exaggeration to say that a father always will claim credit for the virtues of his children and make his wife responsible for their vices. This seems to be a sort of illogical idiosyncrasy that they can not overcome. And this idea has held prevalence for so long that the public takes it for granted. A man grows up and becomes a genius, and although biologists assure us otherwise, we give his sire all the honors for his brains and his virtue. If, instead, the boy goes to the chair, we always say the mother was responsible. She failed in her parental duty. Either she pampered him too much or she did not give him the right sort of training in virtuous and pius ways. Men never will be a consistent or a generous sex until they have learned to take responsibility for their mistakes. And is it too severe to say that at least half the blame for erring children should rest on the shoulders of their fathers.

JULIA LANDERS LIKELY TG BE OUSTED TODAY Board Caucus With Mayor Seen as Finale for Recreation Aid. Deposing of Miss Julia Landers as assistant recreation director was | expected this afternoon at a park board meeting following a caucus j of board members with Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan. Logan C. Scholl, board member r today said he “favored giving the receration department a thorough | cleaning.’David B. Kilgore, former recreation director in his resignation recently, charged Miss Landers had interfered with his work; that she was author of anonymous‘letters, a “troublemaker” in exciting public attitude against him, and that the job was “useless” and should be abolished. That the board is to caucus with Sullivan before the meeting was believed an indication Miss Landers had marshalled support of Democratic leaders. She is former Seventh district Democratic women’s leader and is active in women's city and state political organizations. The board also was expected to condemn activities of city hall politicians who have been criticising the park board for permitting the Chamber of Commerce madework commission to select about fifty men to be hired by the park board in constructing the new Pleasant Run boulevard. Members said the jobs are not to be political “plums.” Since the commission is to employ and pay for a similar number of men, and has a complete list of needy men, it should make the selection, members said.

Indiana Girl Made Happy MANY times a child has every- _ thing to make her happy and still is dissatisfied. This may not be the youngster’s fault. Often it is due to a condition easily corrected. Take the experience of Mrs. S. Hill, 746 Woodlawn Avenue, Indianapolis, who says: '“Nothing seemed to please Margaret. She was fretful, feverish, suffered a lot from colds. She was constipated. “Mother told me about California Fig Syrup and I got some. It relieved her trouble promptly; made her bright and happy again. We have used it for a number of years.” Mothers by thousands praise this pure vegetable product. Children love it. Doctors recommend it to relieve constipation, feverishness, fretfulness, headaches; to open the bowels in colds or children’s ailments. Appetite is increased by the use of California Fig Syrup; breath is sweetened; coated tongue is cleared; digestion and assimilation are aided; weak bowels and stomach are strengthened. For your protection, the genuine always bears the name California.
