folk songs, died in comparative obscurity here, it was learned today. Although hundreds of t’* "’sands of copies of his song had been sold here and in Germany and Russia, the fact that he failed to copyright it until nearly twenty-five years after he composed it, robbed him of all but a small amount of the royalties he might have received. He was 74 years old when he died in Jewish hospital, Brooklyn, after an illness of four weeks. The widow, three daughters and three sons, all of Brooklyn, survive him. Sandler was born in Russia and came to this country in 1888. He was a choirmaster and teacher of music, working in the Jewish theate— '* Manhattan and in charge of preparations for music festivals in the various svnagogues. , In 1896 he was choirmaster at the Windsor theater in the Bowery. There he rehearsed actors in the songs and choruses for plays. A lament was needed and time
pressed. At home, after rehearsal, Mr. Sandler took down a copy of the Old Testament. In Psalms xxii he found the words, “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?’’ This furnished the inspiration for “Eili, Eili.” The song was a success at that presentation and certain popularity resulted. Ten years later it was fairly well known here and was also known in Russia where it was accepted, apparently, as a folk song. In 1906 Mr. Sandler’s daughters heard Sophie Brc-’au sing it at the Metropolitan Opera House. The words and music appea din a Russian encyclopedia in 1912. slderably ? tss than last March, despite the increased tax rate. Last March the treasury received $559,000,000 from this source. For the last calendar year the treasury collected in income taxes $2,332,968,393, which was $170,000,000 less than for the preceding year. Income taxes account annually for about half the total revenue of the government. Cost of government is about $4,000,000 annually. Corporations, though, numbering only about a fourth of the indi-
vidual taxpayers, contribute- most of the income tax to fedeial revenues.
