14 END SENATE TERMS, RETURN TO PRIVATE LIFE Law, Business, Lecturing Vacations Are Among Present Interests. By United Prct WASHINGTON, March s.—Only one of the fourteen senators whose service ended Wednesday has announced his intention of retiring to a life of leisure. The exception is the multi-millionaire, Lawrence C. Phipps, Rep., Colo.), who said he intended to take life easy. Contrary to tradition, not one of the group has a government job. Charles S. Deneen (Rep., 111.) was back at his desk in the law office of Deneen, Healy and Lee in Chicago. Heflin Wili Lecture Furnifold M. Simons, retiring dean of the senate, also had returned to his North Carolina home before his term ended, due to illness. J. Thomas Heflin of Alabama has announced he will embark upon a lecture course. Those who have business tasks awaiting them are Ben Williamson 'Dem., Ky.), who has a wholesale hardware store in Ashland; William E. Brock TDem., Tenn.), who owns a candy factory in Chattanooga; Prank C. Partridge (Rep., Vt.), defeated in Tuesday’s primary elections, is president of the Vermont Marble Company; Coleman L. Blease (Dem„ S. C.), who has a law practice in Columbia, and W. B. Pine (Rep., Okla.), an independent oil man. Five to Take Vacations Five plan to take vacations. They are Joseph E. Ransdell (Dcm., La.), William H. McMaster (Rep., S. D.), Guy D. Goff (Rep., W. Va.), Frederick H. Gillett (Rep., Mass.) and Daniel F. Steck (Dem., Iowa). Ransdell is a member of the Louisiana bar and a cotton planter; McMaster, until he entered upon a political career in 1910, was a banker; Goff, Steck and Gillett arc lawyers. Simmons, defeated in the primary after thirty years in the senate, first entered congress in 1886 as a member of the house. Prior to that, he also was a lawyer.

Aviation POPENS 'CHUTE AFTER DIVING THREE MILES Daring Young Oil Worker Sets New Record in Delayed Jump. By United Preen LOS ANGELES, March s.—How it feels to fall nearly three miles at the speed of 240 miles an hour, was related today by E. S. (Spudi Manning, 22-year-old oil worker, who holds the new record for delayed parachute jumping. Manning’s record leap of 15,265 feet was made when he jumped from a plane at an elevation of 16,665 feet, and pulled the release cord on his parachute when he was only 1,400 feet from the ground. “I was afraid that I would pull the ring too soon after jumping,” Manning related, ‘‘because I

couldn’t see just how close I was to the ground. The wind whipping in my eyes filled them with tears. “I fell feet foremost for perhaps 10,000 feet, and was able to wave at the boys in the plane untU I was out of sight of the ship. ‘‘The earth seemed to be coming up to meet me and then it would fade away. I kept my head, though, and. refrained from pulling the relea; cord. At no time during the fall was I in danger of losing consciousness. ‘Finally, the earth seemed close enough to touch and I pulled the ring. When the parachute opened, I nearly was jerked apart, despite padding under the straps, and I landed in an orange tree.” Arrivals and Departures Mars Hill Airport —Curtiss-Wright visitors included F.
