NEW SCHOOL IS PROPOSED FOR BROAD RIPPLE Recommendation Follows Probe by Special Committee. Recommendation* for anew Broad Ripple high school building to replace the present "flretrap” structure will be made to the school board by a special committee to investigate housing conditions. Paul C. Stetson, superintendent of schools, announced today. It Is probable the committee will submit plans for the new building at the next school board meeting Tuesday night, Stetson said. This report will include results of a comprehensive survey of Broad Ripple school conditions, recently disclosed by The Times as “among the worst in the city school system,” and dangerous to lives of 350 pupils attending the school. Serious Hazards Are Found Hazards were found to exist in a shingle roofed structure known as East hall, a former township school now Is use. Preliminary plans for the new building prepared by K. V. Ammerman, principal, call for a modern school plant with 1,800 pupil capacity, to cost approximately $600,000 or $700,000. Ammerman and Milo H. Stuart, assistant superintendent of schools in charge of high schools, now are considering , plans providing for a building on the type of the present main building at Technical high chool, Ammerman said. Fight Is Renewed It may be erected in units to distribute the cost over a period of years, with a front unit and gymnasium to be completed as soon as the school board sees fit. Broad Ripple citizens and school patrons began their fight for anew building more than two years ago and renewed it/this fall when they asked the board for a gymnasium and athletic field. Doubt as to whether‘the new building could be completed under present financial condition of the school city was expressed by some school officials. Concerning this Stetson said: “Whether it can be done now or not. Is not certain, nevertheless, we are outlining plans for permanent development at Broad Ripple to care for the situation.” Action by Governor Bills Signed, March 3 5. B. 80 (Perkins of South Bend-South-worth)—Permitting; South Bend to retain its present method of selection of school board members regardless of advance.
