SENATOR UNDER FIRE FOR SCORN TOWARD NEGRO Caraway Mistakes a White Correspondent as Black, and Causes Storm. li'i United Press NEW YORK, Feb. 19.—Charges that Senator Thaddeus H. Caraway < Ark.), mistaking a correspondent for a Negro, curtly refused to discuss with him any criticism of his governmental drought relief policy were made here today by friends of O. G, Halliburton, an independent oil operator oi Ft. Worth, Tex. Halliburton, who left here for his home Wednesday, wrote to Senator Caraway from Ft. Worth,on Jan. 31, criticising him for taking a sectional viewpoint on drought relief. He advised the senator that sections of Texas suffered from drought nearly every year, but the government never had given any relief. Caraway is alleged to have replied to this letter on the stationary of the senate Feb. 2. Apparently mistaking Halliburton for a Negro, he is naid to have written as follows: "The first appeal ever made to this government for relief was made from drought sufferers in Texas; and it was white people that made it. But the rest of you. if they had gotten it, could have been fed also. "It Is strange that a Negro always finds something to complain about although his'immedlate wants are cared for. “I should be very glad indeed if you would confine your correspondence to people of your own race.’’ Halliburton’s reply, Written in New York Feb. 16, characterized the senator’s letter as "undignified, contemptible and insulting,” and suggested that Caraway’s position is one of a public servant "without distinction of race, color or previous c ondition of servitude.” Coiiies of all the letters, the two of Halliburton and one of Senator Caraway, have been sent to each member of the senate, it was announced. Exonerated of charges of petty theft in connection with removal of an oriental rug from a leased home she occupied, Mary Nolan, film actress, formerly known on the stage as Imogene Wilson, faced two new charges today before the state labor commission. Her former cook. Joe Bayse, and former maid, Alma McNair, filed wage claims totaling $165.18 for services they said were rendered during the last two months. Stolen Ducks Unclaimed By United Press TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Feb. 19. Part of the corpus delicti which resulted in conviction of Merle Moody, 21, on a charge Os stealing in city court here, remains unidentified. When Mooly was arrested, he had several chickens and four white ducks. The chickens were returned to theii owners, but the ducks remain unclaimed at a local poultry house.

INDICT ‘MIDAS’ ON CONFIDENCE GAME CHARGE Wizard, Now Broke, Prom- * ised 50 Per Cent on Friends' Money. By United Press BELVIDERE, 111., Feb. 19.—A. W. Ben ham, “Midas” who paid his investors as high as 50 per cent interest for the use of their money, was under indictment today on charges of operating a confidence game and obtaining money under false pretenses. His bonds were set at $12,000. The Boone county grand jury returned the indictments late Wednesday after a score of men and women, most of thefn aged, testified they lent their savings to Benham when he promised them high rates of interest. Warrants for Benham’s arrest were issued wfien it was discovered that he and his wife had left Belvidere for the second time in two weeks. They were said to have disappeared some time Wednesday, after leaving a guard at their home. His office was closed. First intimations that all was not well with Benham’s Black Hawk Company came last week when Benham failed to make his usual Monday night payments. He asked his clients to "wait a few days.” The following day he admitted that he wa-; "broke.” Chicago was the first town to have a ten-story building. This was erected in 1885.
