By Science Service NEW YORK, Feb. 18.—At the end of fifteen years the present gold mines of South Africa, which now supply over half of the entire world output, are expected to be near the end of their gold production, F. Lynwood Garrison, Philadelphia mining engineer, warned the American Insitute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers here today. The director of the United States mint, Robert J. Gr-rnt, presenting figures showing that the production of new gold is mounting throughout the world following the decline set in after the world war. Birice the discovery of America, 40,000 tons of gold have been produced throughout the world, Mr. Grant estimates. In the production of new gold, he said, South Africa not only stands first just now but in recent years has been far in the lead of all other regions. In the future economic development of the world, therefore, the South African supply of the standard metal is of paramount importance.

To End a Cough In a Hurry, Mix This at Home
To end a stubborn cough quickly, it is important to soothe and heal the inflamed membranes, get rid of the germs and also to aid the system inwardly to help throw off the trouble. For these purposes, here is a homemade medicine, far better than anything you could buy at 3 times the cost. From any druggist, get 2% ounces of Pinex. Pour this into a pint bottle, and add plain granulated sugar syrup or strained honey to fill up the pint. This takes but a moment, and makes a remedy so effective that you will never do without, once you have used it. Keeps perfectly, and children like it. This simple remedy does three neceasary things. First, it loosens the germ, laden phlegm. Second, it soothes away the inflammation. Third, it is absorbed into the blood where it acts directly on-the bronchial tubes. This explains why it brings such quick relief, even in the obstiuate bronchial coughs which follow cold epidemics. Pinex is a highly concentrated compound of genuine Norway Pine, containing the active agent -of creosote, in a refined, palatable form, and known as one of the greatest healing agents for severe coughs, chest colda and bronchial troubles. Do not accept a si ostitute for Pinex. It is guaranteed to give prompt relief >r money refunded.

HOUSE, SENATE GET READY FOR BIG NAVY FIGHT Proposed New Construction Would Cali for Huge Sum. By Bcrippg.Hou>ard Xetcspapcr AUian'e WASHINGTON, Feb. 18.—Facing the prospect of more than 1400.000,000 in naval expenditure* during the next fiscal year, house and senate are aligning for another struggle over the expansion policy More building, or less, is the issue. Victory for the big navy advocates would mean eventual nullification of the ‘London limitation treaty, say opponents of the pending building program. Because the naval policy of all the leading treaty powers will be influenced by the United States program, diplomatic observers regard the fight as one of international significance. New Program Asked The United States, alone, will be required eventually to spend between $750,000,000 and $1,000,000,000 for new construction before 1936 if the building policy sponsored by the navy is adopted. The opening wedge in this expansion program i s the 1932 naval appropriation bill, now before the senate appropriations committee. Anew construction program aggregating $74,000,000 is asked by the navy, although after spending $53.000,000 on new building in 1932, there will still be on the ways work wh!"h will require a little more than $100,000,000 to compete. The navy also wants $30,000,000 for modernization of the fourteen-year-old battleships Mississippi, Idaho and New Mexio. Need More Officers The navy urges, in addition, an increase in the number of midshipmen at Annapolis, so that more officers will be available by the time the projected warcraft are completed. To hasten the building, $150,000 is asked for new construction ways at the Charleston (S. C.) navy yard. Big navy senators plan finally to offer an amendment to the appropriation bill for initial work on eleven new destroyers, authorized in the 1916 program but held in abeyance by the limitation conferences. Representative Burton L. French (Rep., Idaho), chairman of the house naval appropriations subcommittee, is leading the fight against the program in the house. “It would mean the perversion of the magnificent work of the London conference,” he says. COUZENS’ SON-IN-LAW TO HAVE $50,000 HOME Couple Has Lived in Apartment So Wife Could Do Own Work. By United Press WASHINGTON, Feb. 18.—Mr. and Mrs. William J. Chewning, son-in-law and daughter of Senator and Mrs. James Couzens, are soon to have a $50,000 home here. The senator, it was learned today, has just completed negotiations for a thirty-room house in a fashionable outlying section of Washington for the young couple. The Chewnings since their elopement a year ago, have been living in an apartment, the bride having announced she desired to live a simple life and do her own housework.
In Legislature 50 Years Ago
By United Frew The European custom of settling arguments with duels found little favor among Indiana lawmakers in 1881, although the practice was said to be common in southern states at the time. Representative G. H. Gibson of Charlestown was an ardent supporter of the “gentlemen’s method” for settling quarrels, and attempted. to modify the strict Indiana law against such practices. He introduced an amendment to the state’s criminal code, which would have allowed a person to fight a duel if the combat was staged outside the confines of Indiana. The Gibson amendment also would have repealed that part of the criminal code which made dueling a punishable offense. The solons, however, remained unconvinced after Gibson’s eloquent appeals for the measure and rejected the proposals with little argument.
