HOOVERS’ HILL SCHHOL ENDS ITS FIRST YEAR Mountain Children Doing •Remarkably Well,’ Says Their Teacher. By United Press CRIGLERSVILLE, . year ago this week the Blue ttidge mountains west of here bustled with preparation for the opening of President Hoover’s backwoods school. Today the teacher in an unofficial annual report pronounced the experiment a decided success. Miss Christine Vest, Kentucky girl, selected by the Hoovers to undertake the work of educating the children of untutored mountain families, told the United Press her pupils are “doing remarkably well." "It has settled down to a regular thing now,” she said, “and getting better all the time.” Except for last summer's vacation and occasional trips to the valleys below. Miss Vest has lived alone, high up in the Blue Ridge since her arrival a year ago Valentine's day. The magnificient panorama stretching away below the green and brown bungalow which houses her school and living quarters, oply senes to emphasize the loneliness of her position. Miss Vest is a blue-tyed attractive brunette. "The attendance and work of the pupil has been better since last September than it was before the summer holidays,” she said. “The attendance has been surprisingly regular, considering the fact that many of the pupils have to help their families with the farm work. The children are all doing very well in their studies, too.” Miss Vests’ average attendance is twenty-two, almost exactly the number that attended the opening day of her school last Feb. 24. Most them are the same one w’ho trudged over the hills that chilly morning. Among them is Ray Burraker, the boy who started it all by taking an opposum into President Hoover’s fishing camp. Ingrown Nail Turns Right Out! Pain Stops Instantly / •'Outgro" is a harmless antiseptic manufactured for chiropodists. However, anyone can buy from the drug store a tiny bottle containing directions. A few drops of “Outgro” in the crevice of ingrowing nail reduces inflammation and pain and so toughens the tender, sensitive skin underneath the toe nail, that it can not penetrate the flesh, and the nail turns naturally outward almost overnight.—Advertisement.
Why You Can llri ve the Yew Ford So Many Thousands ol Miles
\Jnusual care in manufacturing is reflected in the smooth 9 reliable performance of the new Ford and its economy and * long life .
THE NEW FORD has made an unusual record for reliability and long life. In police service it has been driven 100,000 and 120,000 miles under the severest driving conditions. Leading industrial companies operating large fleets of Fords report “satisfactory economical service” after many months and years of constant use. The value of good materials, simplicity of design and accuracy in manufacturing is especially apparent after the first 25,000 miles. Throughout the chassis, you find many reasons for the good performance of the Ford. None is more important than the crankshaft. The crankshaft is frequently called the heart of the automobile because of the part it plays in transmitting the power developed by the pistons •"'to the flywheel and driveshaft. It must be properly balanced to insure smooth operation. It must be accurate in size to insure proper clearance in the bearings. It must be true in alignment and weight to reduce friction and give long continuous service without adjustment. The crankshaft of the new Ford has great strength because it is made of carbon manganese steel, speciaUy developed by Ford metallurgists. It w ill resist a twisting stress of 2 tons at a leverage of twelve inches from its axis.

PAY HONOR TO CAPITAL 'DEO' AT MARDI GRAS Miss Adele Jahncke Queen of Comus at Carnival; Lent Ends Fete. By United Press NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 13.—New Orleans awakened today in sackcloth and ashes—and with a headache. Mardi Gras was climaxed with riotous merrymaking which kept sleepy residents of the city awake until the break of day. Honors of Mardi Gras were given Tuesday night to Miss Adele debutante daughter of Navy Secretary and Mrs. Ernest Lee Jahncke. Miss Janncke was queen of Comus, the most exclusive carnival organization of Orleans. She was a glittering picture as she entered her coutt dressed in white satin, entirely covered with rhinestones. Her train was golden cloth covered with shining jewels. Two pages carried the heavy train, as, at midnight, the court of Rex joined that of Comus, and Miss Gladys Gelpi, of carnival, shared the throne with Miss Jahncke and Rex and Comus. Merrymaking did pot cease with ■the coming of Lent. Long into the morning hours people frolicked thiough the narrow streets of the French quarter, crowding night clubs, speakeasies and the gambling casinos near the city. Following the parade of the Krents of Cosmos witnessed by a

TORTURE A6ED WOMAN; FIRE IS SETTO BODY Disordered Apartment Displays Story of Struggle for Hours Wrth Bandits. By United Press SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 18.—A soiled and tom cap was the only clew today to the identity of ban-dit-slayers who tortured an elderly San Francisco grocerywoman, robbed her shop, and set fire to her oilsoaked clothing. The body of Mrs. Albina Voorhies, 65. who preferred the independence of her store to a quiet life with relatives, was found by firemen in her blazing apartment, located above the store. Nearby was a charred section of rope used by the torturers, and the cap., The cash drawer in the store had been looted. The disordered apartment showed Mrs. Voorhies had struggled with the bandits, probably for hours, police said. She had been beaten on the head. Apparently she was unconscious when her jjlothing was ignited, but later she revived sufficiently to drag herself to the bathroom, where her body was found. Shirts Taken From Store Window Smashing a large wdndow in the E. S. Shepardson clothing store, Fifty-fourth street and College avenue, early today, thieves took a few shirts from the display window.
THE NEW FORD TUDOR SEDAN
The greatest care is taken to make sure that the Ford crankshaft will be in perfect balance in all positions and at all speeds. The machines for the dynamic balance tests are set upon foundations of gum rubber and- are so delicately adjusted that the very air that surrounds them i first cleansed and then held at 68 degrees by thermostatic control. Though weighing many pounds, the Ford crankshaft is so carefully balanced that it will remain moticnless when placed upon two perfectly leveled parallel bars,
