BEAUTY OF LINE ! EMPHASIZED IN DODGE MODELS: Improved Performance Is Assured, Declaration of Engineers. In addition to the Six. which a year ago heralded the successful return to the low-price field, and the Eight-in-line, through which Dodge dependability has been emphasized. Dodge Brothers will present anew Six and anew Eight-in-line at the Indianapolis motor show. The new Dodge Six and Dodge ] Eight-in-line add new achievements of grace and beauty of line; lower centers of gravity, through added lowness and lengthened wheelbase; Improved performance, through engines of increased horsepower and greater efficiency: and a large variety of refinement? and improvements affecting every unit of their design, officials declare. Dodge Brothers engineers have produced a body design on the lengthened and lowered chassis so distinctive that it does not even closely resemble any other existing line of automobiles. ’ Beauty in the Eight begias with the double-bar bumper and the deep molded radiator with automatic shutters and continues with anew sweep of front fenders, long, lowhood. a tailored fitting visor, chromium framed windshield, and the now famour. all-steel mono-piece body. Wheelbase Longer The wheelbase is 118 Inches, four Inches longer than that oi ike standard Dodge eight, while the overall length is 180 21-32 inches. The primary requisite of safety has been enhanced greatly by these dxtinct advance . in engineering. Together with the mono-piece body, they contribute materially to the lower center of gravity of the entire car. which makes for better roadability. less side-sway, easier handling, and closer hugging to the road at higher rates of speed. Mono-piece bodies, for which Dodge cars are famous, have been made possible in both the six and eight through development by steelmen of the continuous rolling mill for body steel and the recent advances made in stamping and electrical flash welding. Elimination of body joints by welding thg major sections assures complete continuity of body structure and also does away with annoying squeaks and rattles and adds further to the factor of safety. There arc six optional upholstery selections of the choicest of fabrics, and twenty color combinations, including new blacks, browns, town blue, and new gray treatments. Seats Arc Adjustable Front seats are adjustable. Interior hardware is of a conservative treatment done in nickel, while exterior hardware is of chromium plate Body types of the new Dodge Eight-in-line will include a fourdoor sedan, coupe with rumble seat,

Road Signs Go Modern
‘ ,'* ! '■ " ®;
The coming of the airplane has.brought about a change in road signs near the Grand Central Air Terminal at Glendale, Cal. The sign Eller Hopkins is showing here is displayed on a road which runs parallel to the airport, and over which planes fly very low’- to land: It is said tha- the sign eliminates the chance of a motorist becoming startled, at the sight of a plane rooming overhead unexpectedly, and losing control of liis car.
’ convertible coupe with rumble seat, and roadster, ranging in price from $1,095 to $1,135. The engine is of the conventional L-head type, with cylinders cast en bloc, integral with the crank case ; and supported by heavy cross-web I construction. Increase in bore to 3 inches with a 4’,i-inch stroke has increased the piston displacement I to 249.33 cubic inches. The engine | develops 84 brake horse power at 3,200 r. p. m. The peak horse power is readied at a. slower engine speed than heertofore, retains its power ; longer, and has more power at j slower speeds. Pistons of Aluminum Alloy The crankshaft is a statically and dynamically balanced drop forging, drilled to permit the forcing of oil to all bearings under fifty pounds pressure. Pistons are of light aluminum ! alloy, ventilated bridge-type, steel ! strutted. Connecting rods are dropforged from a special high manganese forging steel, B's inches in length between centers. Ignition is by a six-volt battery, with full automatic spark advance. Metric spark plugs with heavy electrodes and similar to those used in racing car and airplane engines, are used. Oil is cleansed by circulaing through an oil filter located on the left side of the motor. The plain-tube down-draft carbureter, introduced so successfully a year ago, is retained. An air adjustment is provided for idling speeds. The new Dodge eight engine has
larger cooling capacity, with thermo-statically controlled water circulation and automatic radiator shutters. HUDSON DESIGNS NEW TASY STARTING DEVICE Troubles Caused by Temperature Overcome by Engineers. Anew and more powerful starting motor is used in the new: greater Hudson eight designed to give starting ease. The additional torque or power developed in this starting motor breaks the oil drag on a cool motor and spins it at higher initial speed. Anew automatic carburetor choking device used on the 1930 models is retained and anew by-pass is employed which introduced into the intake manifold a gas and air mixture at high velocity when the engine is revolving at starting speed. This, coupled with hotter ignition from increased voltage in the ignition circuit, made available with the new starting motor, results in quick starting even under adverse temperature conditions. The improved carburetor is providing a homogeneous mixture to ail cylinders immediately when the engine is started. High compression used in conjunction with Essex Super-Six patented features of combustion chamber head design, is another contributing factor to the large horsepower development by this engine.

DASHING ESSEX MODEL GIVEN PUBLIC’S 0. K. New Line Features Lowest Prices in History of . Company. The favorable reception given the Essex Super-six since its introduction late in November was so impressive that, despite the season, there is every indication the new car will be as popular as previous Essex models. The prices are lowest in history of the company. More dashing than ever before, with greatly increased quality in body, chassis, motor, upholstery, fittings and appointments, the new car takes the place of the sensationally successful Essex Challenge! in the quality at low price field for 1931. There are six body types mounted on the long 113-inch chassis, all of them giving more room and more comfort. Door widths, seat measurements, leg-room—all are increased. The models are: Coach, standard sedan with two windows, town sedan, two-passenger coupe and coupe with rumble seat for four passengers, and sport roadster. New Sport Roadster The sport roadster is an entirely new model. In it the lines of the high Essex hood are carried straight back past a low rakish windshield to a pointed boat type rear deck. Leather upholstery seats for three, and two in the rumble, are provided. There is a weather top roof and curtains, completing a dashing newmodel. Essex has adopted the style of much more costly cars in building a chrome-plated bronze grille into the radiator shell, thus creating a dashing and distinctive front on which to carry the Essex symbol. Essex has simplified the interior treatment in this new 1931 creation, leaning strongly to the severe simplicity of modern artistry in all appointments and sittings. Essex cushions are softer, richly, but quietly upholstered and form fitting. Attractive fabric has been used that will hold an immediate appeal to lovers of luxurious automotive transportation. All seats are adjustable, front and rear, and an adjustable steering column is an entirely new- departure in cars of the Essex price class. Power Is Increased Many advancements in body construction have been made in Essex steel bodies. In the framing of the roof, steel replaces the more conventional wood roof rails. This is permanently fastened to vertical body posts and pillars through sturdy steel brackets. Diagonal steel brace strips of airplane type, join the roof corners and further stiffen the entire roof structure. In like manner, steel plates are permanently riveted to the steel body sills. This power plant with the bore increased from 2 s * to 2"i inches and improved carburetion now develops sixty horsepower, compared with fifty-eight horsepower in last year’s motor. This substantial increase is evident throughout the entire driving range. huppTights are safe Tilt-Beam Type of Head Lamps Used in All Models. All new Hupmobile models employ the tilt-beam type of head High powered reflectors throw a bright light through a spread lens, breaking up the sharp light beam so that it is nonglaring. At the same time the lens spread the light completely over the road from side to side, distrubuting it far ahead and permitting complete vision for safe driving.
The outstanding automobile achievements of the past five years belong to i STUDEBAKER These achievements began with Studebakert deteraunafipp to sponsor moderately priced eight-cylinder cars of superior design and durability while other large-scale manufacturers remained committed to sixes. The Studebaker Eights quickly wrote motor car history. They won, and still hold unchallenged, scores of official records for speed and endurance. They became, and still remain, undisputed World stock-car Champions. Studebaker’s success with Eights became the goal of the entire motor car industry. Numerous manufacturers began feamrmg Eights. But Studebaker’s greatest achievement was still tocome. On July io, 1930 Studebaker introduced Free Wheeling with positive gear control—and another great epoch in motoring began. As developed by Studebaker, Free Wheeling is so remarkable in effect, so simple in design, so easy to use, so much safer, that not one driver out of a hundred would do without it after a brief trial, Free Wheeling is not the feature of a season but the future of an industry. For the first time in the history of the automobile, Free Wheeling with positive gear control releases car momentum from subjection to the power plant that creates it and puts that momentum to work —enabling a car to travel 10,000 miles for every 8,000 miles of engine effort. It saves gasoline and oiL It saves car wear. It simplifies gear shifting. It brings anew thrill to motoring. Today America's two finest cars —Pierce-Arrow and Lincoln—have adopted Free Wheeling as introduced by Studebaker And thus comes to a magnificent climax a program of progress that for the past five years has been the pace-setter for the entire industry—symbolic of the leadership which for seventy-nine years has marked the name of Studebaker. See the new Free Wheeling Studebakers. They embody the only development of real consequence at the Show. REO COMPANY IS ONE OF OLDEST Hundreds of Manufacturers Quit Business. The Reo Motor Car Company, now in its twenty-sixth year, is one of eleven automobile manufacturers which have survived twenty-five or more of the swift change and hardy competition of the industry. Since its inception in the dawn of the century Reo has seen 640 separate makes of motor cars bid for a lasting place in public favor. Os all these, only forty-five are on the market today. Tile most prolific year for the introduction of new names was 1903, * year before Reo came into being, when a grand total of fifty-one cars made their bow. It may astonish most readers to know that there were four times as many kinds of cars on the market prior to 1905 as there are today. In all 186 cars had been introduced before that time. Since 1920 a total of seventyseven makes have been brought out, of which only eighteen are still in manufacture. Only eleven cars born during the period of 1910-1920 are In the present list of forty-five going concerns. ENGINE HAS LONG LIFE Cooling System of De Soto Keeps Uniform Temperature. Cool operation of De Soto engines accounts for some of its long life. The water spaces have been very carefully laid out so that the water flow is uniform around all the parts that require cooling. Tests have been made in the laboratory which indicate an exact uniformity of the temperature of the different cylinders. The tests were made by drilling the water jackets at different points and inserting thermometers. The readings indicated that all cylinders are being equally cooled
regardless of their location, thus proving the efficiency of the inter-
