De Soto again has come forward a motor car sensationally low m price and high In performance —the new De Soto six, according to L. G. Peed, general sales manager, De Soto Motor Corporation. A companion car to the new De Soto straight eight, the new creation is an answer to the public demand for a sjx that is not limited to ability, safety, or comfort because of low pride. "The new six,” declares Peed, "is a masterly piece of engineering. It is new from the ground up and characteristically De Soto in every particular. -It is the result of long experimentation by Chrysler engineers and has been tested and proved under all sorts of driving conditions. "Increased power and speed have been built into the car, the capacity of the internal expanding fourwhwcl hydraulic brakes has been increased and ease of steering and handling improved. “The car has the new double-drop frame construction and the new silent, steel-weld body, bringing the center of gravity closer to the ground, making the Dc Soto a car of real safety and providing the opportunity of creating a car of real beauty and grace.” Lowest Cost in World A little more than a year ago a mysterious car under heavy disguise startled the industry by playing tag over the Pennsylvania mountains near Ligonier and completely outstripping eights of much larger type. This car proved to be the first De Soto eight, announced at the 1930 show as the lowestpriced eight in the world. To be sure of maintaining its commanding position as an outstanding performer, De Soto engineers, under direction of the Chrysler staff, have given the new straight eight still greater power, acceleration and speed for 1931. The new straight eight engine develops 77-horse power. This increase hao been made possible by Increasing .the bore V* inch, and the compression ratio to 5.4 to 1. A change in gear ratio from 4.9 to l to 4.6 to I affords greater speed. Appearance Is Improved The crankshaft is heavier and the motpr is supported by rubber engine mountings at four points. improvements in appearance have been noteworthy also with the slen-der-proflle radiator, longer hood and the De Soto crest in color mounted on the headlamp cross rodThe famous uni-steel, electrically welded body, is continued with various refinements, including a redesigned instrument panel, new style French plait upholstery and anew and harmonizing design of interior hardware. Hudson Has Balanced Crankshaft The Greater Hudson Eight crankshaft is compensated fully by the use of integrally forged counterweights on the crankshaft throws. Before a shaft is built into the engine, it is tested fully on special machines, to insure that both static and dynamic balance, which literally means balance at rest or when revolving at high speed, has been obtained.

New Method of Combustion Gives Greater Gas Efficiency. Even as light a substance as gas can be pulled down easier than it can be lifted, and by utilizing this fact through an entirely new manifold and carburetor system of the down-draft type, engineers have been able to add substantially to the horse power and performance of the new 1931 Oldsmobile. The air intake of the new Oldsmobile system is through a combination air cleaner and silencer located diiectly under the hood and above the carburetor and engine. The air descends Into the carburetor, where it is mixed with gasoline and the vaporized mixture is drawn downward into the manifold and thence into the combustion chambers. Speeds Up Engine This direct downward course taken by the fuel mixture both speeds up and increase the amount of mixture entering each combustion chamber. This results in greater power which produces such performance characteristics as speed, improved acceleration nad hillclimbing. Automotive engineers in the past have realized the .value of an efficient type of down-draft carburetion and manifolding, but due to other factors were not able to produce the desired improvement. Chief among the early obstacles was the inability of bringing the gasoline to a sufficiently high level due to the gravity feed systems then in use. The perfection of a gasoline pump, such as Oldsmobile adopted several years ago, obviated this difficulty. Since that • time Oldsmobile and General Motors engineers have worked successfully to remove the other engineering difficulties which hampered the perfection of a down-draft carburetion and manifolding system. Has Automatic Heater While the fine performance shown by the new Oldsmobile 1s due in a large measure to this advance in carburetion and manifolding. Several other improvements contribute to the results obtained. One of these improvements, closely associated with the success of tne down-draft principle, is an automatic manifold heater. This preheats the gas mixture at slow speeds, when it is most required and thus provides more uniform vaporization of the fuel throughout the speed range. The heater is fully automatic, adjusting the amount of heat provided according to car speed.

BUIGK TO SHOW NEW FEATURES i IN 20 MODELS Front Compartments Made Roomy by Changing Shift and Brake. In tile twenty-seven years that Buick has been known to the motor world, no Buick has ever before this year been offered in such a wide variety of models and in such a broad price range. Asa result, the Buick eight exhibit has become the focal point of the automobile show held this week, according to E- T. Strong, president and general manager of the Buick Motor Company. Every one of the twenty models is powered with a straight eight valve-in-head engine and equipped with the engineering features that have made Buick the outstanding car of the year—syncro-mesh transmission, engine oil temperature regulator, carburetor air intake silencer, torque tube drive, steering wheel road shock eliminator and many other important advancements. These twenty Buick eights are divided into four series, each series differing in the length of the wheelbase and in price. The smallest of the series is the 8-50 which is now offered for the first time with the -cyncro-mesh transmission and other big car refinements. Built on 114-Inch Wheelbase The six models in this series are built on a 114-inch wheelbase. The straight eight motor in these 8-50 models develops 76% horse power and has a maximum speed in excess of seventy-five miles per hour. Five models on a 118-inch wheelbase comprise the 8-60 series and these cars have a straight eight motor which develops 90 horse power and gives a speed in excess of eighty miles per hourThe big cars in the two remaining series are the 4-passenger coupe and the 5-pasoenger four-door sedan in the 8-80 series on a 124inch wheelcase, and seven models on a 132-inch wheelbase in the 8-90 series. The Buick syncho-mesh transmission is the selective type with three speeds forward and one reverse. Felt Is Used Insulation is accomplished in the front compartment of all models through the use of layers of felt and insulating material which in turn is covered with a special embossed composition board on the dash. On the floor a heavy rubber mat is used instead of the composition board. In the rear compartments the felt is glued directly to the floor and covered with a carpet of deep piling. All metal floor pans, even under the seat cushions, are covered with feltAnother improvement that attracts the attention of many show visitors is the fact that both the brake and gear control levers in the front compartment have been moved forward, making this compartment unusually roomy. artistic design which is illuminated with a two-way lighting system that gives indirect lightning when driving and a direct light to the front compartment when desired. The 1931 Buick eight differs from all previous Buicks in that the bodies and chassis have been developed as a unit. Asa result of this unit development a maximum in strength and rigidity has been produced that eliminates squeaks and rattles, Strong said. The entire framework of all bodies has b?en greatly strengthened by revising the roof construction and using metal brackets in place of glued joints. One piece shroud and windpost panels are used and add greatly to the rigidity
of the front of the body, and eliminate open joints which cause cracking of paint and leakageAnother contribution to driver comfort is found in the redesigned front seat and the mechanism which adjusts it. Both the driver's seat and the front passenger seat are lower and upholstered with wider and deeper cushions. Liner Has Car ‘Parking Space’ To do away with costly crating in the shipping of motorists’ cars across the Atlantic, the French liner Lafayette has installed a “car park” into which cars can be driven and anchored during the trip across the water.

CADILLAC PAYS OUT MILLIONS Development of New Cars Shows Faith in U. S. An example of the courage of the automobile industry in taking a leading part in the restoration of business normalcy is provided in the Cadillac Motor Car Company’s expenditure of $54,000,000 during 1730 alone to bring out two new cars, the V-16 and V-12. Both the Cadillac V-16 and Cadillac V-12 were about ready for public announcement following three years of experimental work when the business recession came abruptly late in 1929. As an expression of faith in the country, in the future of business and in its own products. Cadillac Ignored all economic obstables and introduced the V-16 in January of 1930. Encouraged by its reception, Cadillac again discounted the business slump and presented the V-12 last October. Behind these presentations were $6,000,000 worth of new dies, new 1 tools and new machinery; $14,000,COO spent in pay roll; $34,000,000 expended for new materials; a total of $54,000,000. Public response has justified this courageous policy. In the first year of its existence, the V-16 set anew sales record for cars of its price class when more than 2,400 units were sold. Its companion>the V-12, already has enjoyed a remarkable sales volume. LUBRICATION IMPROVED Franklin Car Has Installed New System. Two major improvements in lubrication are noted in the 1931 Franklin. The Bowen system has been installed and takes* the oil direct from the crankcase, regulates its pressure, filters and delivers it in proper quantities to the valve gear. The oil that is fed to the walking beam cases also drains off and returns to the sump through the push-rod tubes. A change in the angle of gear teeth in the main oil pump now provides a greater supply of oil.
