Fob. 12.—Jackasses, machine guns and inelegant epithets were employed with frontier-day recklessness today in the battle between Mayor William Hale Thompson and Judge John H. Lyle for the Republican nomination for mayor. Thompson' paraded his donkey and jackass through the streets to symbolize his opponent. Judge Lyle. Lyle displayed submachine guns and sawed-off shotguns at his meetings as symbols of the mayor's alleged ineffectiveness against crime. And - between these two rivals flew such epithets as: “Blubbering Jungle Hippopotamus," “Nutty Judge," “Jumbo, the Flood Relief t Quack." “Moron,” “Lurching, Shambling Tmbectle," “Arrogant, Incompetent, Inefficient Judge,” "Flabby Jowls of a Barnyard Hog.” “Essence of Nothingness.” The Chicago Daily News, supporting Arthur F. Albert in the primary, suggested in a humorous vein that an alienist be appointed to pass on the mentality of Thompson and Lyle, since each is attacking the other s sanity. The Chicago Tribune is backing Judge Lyle. Although the flearst papers, tlic Hera ld-E.\pminor and the Evening American, have not definitely indors'd 'Thompson’s candidacy, they give him vide publicity.
