NEW YORK, Feb. 10.— much about your first spring dress—the one you're going to get veVy soon now ... or maybe right now? It’s a good idea to do some thinking about it—some thinking, too, about the kind of coat you’re going to have and whether this new dross will go with the coat to make, an ensembled costume. One of the first things fashion-knowing women do, before they choose this first spring dress, is to plan a definite color scheme for their entire spring wardrobe. Then they choose a dress that fits Into this scheme. Why? So that when they’ve finally assembled their complete spring
wardrobe, this first spring dress, bought earlier than the other Items, won’t be something that clashes. This year in shopping for a spring dress—one that can be worn now as well as In the spring—fashionable women are keeping several things in mind. Things that make the difference betweup a spring and a winter dress. They’re looking for such details as straighter skirts, front fullness Instead of side fullness, pleats rather than gores—and these pleats stitched part way down and not released until low down in the skirt. They’re looking for belts or gir-

lng jackets are going to be very fashionable In the spring and that these jacket dresses are practical because In warm weather they can be worn on the street without a coat. Smart for Spring Another thing they re member Is that two-piece dresses, or dresses that look two-piece, are smart spring fashions—and that these, too, make good street costumes. One good type to choose for this first spring dress would be a jacket dress of printed silk—a one-piece dress with a matching jacket. That gives you two good spring fashions—jackets and color, and it’s a good way to make the break between the dark winter dress and the light colored spring one. And there are hundreds of different printed Jacket dress fashions to choose from. We’ve had one sketched above at the right—a dress with a straight, box-like cardigan Jacket and & contrasting vestee effect in plain color. Contrasting Trim Good Another good dress to choose now would be plain color with contrasting trimming. Black with white, perhaps, or navy with biege or light blue. The left hand sketch shows a color combination like this. And It Illustrates one of those fashionable dresses that give the effect of being two-piece. You’ll notice that this has front fullness that keeps the skirt quite straight in line, and that this fullness Is pleats that are stitched part way down. Dresses like these look fine under a winter coat. And they’ll look fine under a spring coat, too, or coatless when it’s warm enough. Exotic Look Given Face by Earrings BY ALICIA HART The new coiffures, thank Heaven, recognize the ears as part and parcel of the beauty that there is in a face. Now that ears have come out into the open, there are all sorts of possibilities of improving your beauty by concentrating on t' : ears. Have you ever, for instance, noticed how a certain pair of delicate, graceful, dangling earrings, will lengthen and give an exotic look to certain faces? If you haven’t experimented with earrings and your own face, now Is certainly the time to get busy. Earrings of all types are in order. You can have delicate little earlines that hold twinkling Jewels In the grip of fine gold or platinum and run up the outside of the ear for a short distance, instead of hanging like earrings. You can have the most delicate of little Jewelled earrings, the heaviest and most barbarian of primitive African ones. I am often asked about the seriousness of piercing the ears for earrings. It Is the simplest operation in the world, doesn’t really hurt, is healed in three days and the only

safe and sane thing to do If you are going in for earrings of any value. Earrings that screw on are a constant nuisance. They either hurt from being screwed on too tightly, or else they fall off and are lost. If your ears are well-shaped and add to the beauty of your face, do get the habit of doing your hair so that they show. By curling your hair behind them, or wearing your hair so that Just a bit of the top of them is cut off, but the rest shows, or by showing the tops and not the lobes, you can get anew effect that may be stimulating, and certainly just changing your hair is interesting. Last, but not least, comes that important feature, make-up for your ears. Do you know that ears now are being rouged for evening, Just like lips? Just the lobes, usually, but a certain brunet stage beauty is creating quite a furore by parting her black curls so that the tops of her ears show through the curls, gleaming delicately red like her cheeks. This makeup is for evening, only. Don’t go roughing your ears for work. That is poor taste. For this little added touch is a glamorous one, saved for romantic occasions.
