FLYIN6 WRITER FINDS CHILEANS GOODFARMERS South American Republic Makes Impression on Air Traveler. This la the tenth article hr John D. Mdtiontrr, written inline aa airplane iraoni Central *n< genth America. BY JOHN D. MONTGOMERY Chilo is delightful, and particularly Santiago. But what an unusual shape for a country! From a ahlp in the Pacific ocean, one can *** the tops of snow-capped mountains in Argentina—clear across Chile. Chile is 3,000 miles long, but Only ninety miles wide. Valparaiso is the largest seaport in South America. Santiago, three and one-half hours by express from Valparaiso, is the largest city on the Pacific In South America. On the train from Valparaiso to Santiago, I noticed the beauitful scenery, fine farms, progressive farmers, with modem machinery, clean homes and such obvious sights that make a good impression on any one who has been in the other sections of the west coast cf South America. I arrived in Santiago to witness the spring festival—a celebration that makes the New Orleans Mardi Gras look like a county fair. Every one takes a part. During the time that the celebration of the welcoming of spring is on—Saturday morning through Sunday night, the streets are filled with costumed people, decorated cars, expensive floats and Jolly crowds. The climax of the carnival comes with the parade in honor of the queen on Sunday night. The streets were lined with spectators

and the cars were two abreast and moving in one direction on one side of the reviewing stand and in the other direction on the other side. I was surprised at the way the Chileans can spot an American in any crowd. I yelled, “Adios, Linda,” as all the rest of our party did, at pretty girls lining the sidewalks and they shouted back, “Muchas gracias, gringo.” My greeting stood out like a bandaged thumb.
