WORLD PLANE ROUTES COVER HUGE MILEAGE Distance Equal to 20,000 Times Around Globe Flown in 1930. BV RICHARD D. MCMILLAN United Press Staff Correspondent Feb. 6.—Airplanes on all -he air routes of the world flew a distance almost equivalent to 20,000 tune around the globe during 1930. Official statistics published here show the enormous growth of world air transportation during the past ten years is shown by the following tables: io-m HUea flown Miles flown }** 8.190.000 1929 47.624.000 1325 12,340.000 1930 70,500.000 During the last two years alone, the French air lines have increased their mileage 300,000 miles, the most notable trail blazed In that period being the land and sea air route to and from South America. The planes fly from Paris down the west coast of Africa to the nearest point of land to Brazil, whence the malls are conveyed by boat to South America. Tt is hoped that by next year the mails will be flown the entire distance between Paris and Buenos Aires. At present the service saves more than ten days. Development of French aviation in commercial air transportation in the last two years is indicated in the table of Aero-Postalc Company, which, however, does not include Air Union, the French line which flies hundreds of thousands of miles yearly on the Paris-London and other lines radiating from Paris. Airways in both the United States, and South America contributed largely to the total of world mileage, while Canadian mileage in four years has grown from 200 to 6,950 miles. The longest existing air route is claimed to be the London to India section of 5,500 miles, but this will be eclipsed when the anticipated Paris-Buenos Aires service is inaugurated.

There are going to be no babies in this family of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Dempsey—take it from Estelle Taylor, the “Mrs.” of the combination. The film star told interviewers in New Orleans that she plans to continue her career in the talkies too steadily to raise a family. She and Jack are shown here as they posed together in one chair in a New Orleans hotel.
G.O.P, HOUSE, SENATE CHIEFS FACING REVOLT Campaign to Get Scalps of Longworth, Moses May Succeed. By dcrippt-Hoxcard Xctcspapcr Alliance WASHINGTON, Feb. 6.—Revolt against the Republican leadership of congress threatened today, with the prospect that insurgent G. O. P. members may defeat Speaker Longworth (Rep., O.) and Senator Moses (Rep., N. H.) for re-election as presiding officers of house and senate. The demand for Moses’ scalp has been made by westerners and by a few old guardsmen who have taken affront at his abrupt method of treating them on and off the floor. It also is understood that certain drys are opposed to him on the ground that he is a political wet, and always votes against prohibition measures. The campaign against Longworth chiefly involves the insurgents’ insistence upon liberalization of the house rules so as to wreck the steam roller operated by the Longworth-Snell-Tilson group. Several members have indicated they might vote for minority leader Garner (Dem., Tex.) for Speaker instead of ’’Nick,” unless the latter agrees to greater freedom of debate and action. Among those who may oppose Longworth are Representatives Maas and Christgau of Minnesota, and Representative La Guardia (Rep., N. Y.). All these men are interested in certain measures that have been blocked by Longworth’s machine. In a house speech' this afternoon Maas virtually delivered

an ultimatum to the Republicans’ boss. As the next house will stand 218 Republicans. 216 Democrats and one Farmer-Labor member, a change of only two votes will be necessary to upset the present organization. In the senate the lineup will be fortyeight Republicans, forty-seven Democrats and one Farmer-Laborite, and a shift of the same number will oust Moses. It is understood the Democrats will name Senator Pittman of Nevada as their candidate. He was defeated by only a few votes In the last election.
