REAL PROBLEMS FACED BUTLER IN VICE DRIVES Lack of Support, Hostility of Business Leaders Greet Crusade. *oHot!nr I, th* fifth srtlcl* In * „rle about Onoral Smdlf Butler. BV RAYMOND CLAPPER Lnlted Pre** Staff Correspondent 'CopvTlßht. 1031. by United PreMi WASHINGTON. Feb. s.—After about six months in Philadelphia, General Smedley Butler concluded that many of the “best people” were standing behind him in his fight—- * long way behind him. Bankers were against crime, but when Butler removed the policemen who were doing duty as guards inside their banks Rnd forced them to hire their own private guards there was complaint. He shifted traffic policemen, alleging many of them had become friendly with wealthy men, who gave them large Ups for permitting regular violations of traffic rules. Butler claimed the Chamber of Commerce refused to support his war on vice on the ground it had affected the hotel business by causing salesmen to avoid Philadelphia over week-ends because liquor couldn't bought in hotels. Courtesy Cards Demanded "There are no fighting parsons in Philadelphia,” Butler complained at the end of his experience. “All seemed afraid of the money suppliers.” He said a. prominent civic figure, arrested for speeding, appealed to be lPt off and when Butler declined, a magistrate excused the man. A world-renowned philanthopist, Butler says, insisted upon having a courtesy card w-hlch would enable him to park his car anywhere. “Philadelphia's leading banker, one of the wealthiest men in America, appealed to me personally several times to renew such a card for him,” Butler said. "He had carried one for many years. Refused, he cooled." Butler said pillars of the church and society often had liquor in their homes, drank in public and served it at dinner-dances given for their children in Philadelphia hotels. Governor for Him Governor Pincliot was for him and some civic organizations and the church members in numerous instances supported him. His leave was extended for another year. Bickering increased. Often he and the mayor were not speaking. There was constant friction. Butler continued to fight in spectacular fashion. He moved a cot into city hall to be available for sudden night calls. Finally the mayor threatened dismissal. Butler says Kendrick accused him of hounding the big hotels. Toward the end of his second year. Butler was pressing to padlock the Ritz-Carlton and to revoke the license of the BellevucStratford. He wanted to stay on, while the Philadelphia politicians wanted to get rid of him. The fight was carried to the White House and President Cooltdge declined to extend Butler's leave. Butler told the press he intended to resign from the marine corps and continue in Philadelphia. He had been appointed to a fouryear term. Mayor Kendrick requested his resignation and when Butler delayed. issued an order of immediate dismissal. Holdups Are Reduced Leaving office to return to the marines, Butler claimed he had reduced holdups from three a day to one every three days, and other crime to a lesser extent. “I believe Philadelphia wants to he cleaned up,” he said, “not entirely, but just enough to appear respectable." Just before his dismissal, a civic group sought to arrange for presen-

SPEED RECORD SET 35 Miles an Hour Pace by Coyote Is Recorded, Bu Science Service YELLOWSTONE PARK, Wyo., Feb. 5.—A Yellowstone coyote has broken the speed record for coyotes set up by Ernest Thompson Seton in his “Life Histories of Northern Animals.” According to Seton, the best speed for a northern coyote was 24 miles an hour. The Yellowstone animal, officially paced, kept up a speed of from 25 to 35 miles an hour for a distance of 1.6 miles, anew record for coyotes to shoot at. Joseph Joffee, assistant to die superintendent of Yellowstone National park, tells the story. While en route by automobile to the buffalo ranch recently he encountered two coyotes on the road. Upon seeing the car, they separated, as always seem to be. their custom, one going to the left over a game trail and the other to the right, along the road. Joffee immediately picked up speed and followed the one in the road. Mrs. Joffee, who watched the speedometer, states that at no time did it record less than 25 miles an hour, and that the maximum was 35 miles. tation of a $2,500 watch for him. But the matter was dropped after he was dismissed. Newspaper men gave him a dinner and presented him with a little square silver token, describing it as “square money, the only kind Butler would take.” When he went to the railroad station to leave to go back to the marines, one police officer and two detectives were there in addition to his relatives and intimate friends to bid him good-by.
