EARTH IGNORED I BY ASTROLOGER 1 IN HOROSCOPES System Clings to Theory Proved Erroneous Centuries Ago. Tlu# It tbe fourth and laat of a series f articles written for The Times by Science Service “debunking” astrology. Bu Science Service Why don’t astrologers consider the earth Itself, when they cast a horoscope? They have not hesitated to adopt a scientific sounding terminology, to talk about vibration.* of the planets, and point to the proven effects of ultra-violet rays and X-rays as analogous. But we now know, and have known for centuries, that the earth is merely one of a family of planets that revolve around the sun. Though smaller than the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, it is larger than Mercury or Mars and al?pyt the same size as Venus and the newly discovered Pluto. Astronomers agree that all these planets were bom of the sun, so that all are almost certainly made up of practically the same sort of material, though in different proportions. They Overlook Facts Every sort of “vibration" or physical influence known to science, whethfer it be magnetism, gravitation, light intensity, or anything else, diminishes in proportion to the square of the distance of the source. But the astrologers take no account of this. The distant planets are Just as potent as the closer cues. Saturn his the most evil iniuence, while Jupiter is supposed tc be the most propitious of all the planets. Mars has an evil influence only second to that of Saturn, while Venus is beneficial, second in that respect to Jupiter. The sun is considered as a planet, aa is the moon. If these various bodies have the effects imagined, then certainly the sun should be the most powerful of all, because of its great size. Then the earth itself, which we now know to be no different essentially from the other planets, should have an overwhelming effect, because of its proximity. Vet, to the astrologer, the effect of the earth is negligible. v Cling to Ancient Theory This Is all because the cosmogony of the astrologer is Ptolemaic. Though he has enough sense to deny it, the astrologer still operates on the basis that the earth is at the center of the universe, and entirely different in character from the other planets, all of which revolve around it. Aristarchus, who first propounded the theory that the sun is at the center, and that the earth is a planet, and Copernicus, who popularized it, might never have existed for all the difference it makes to the astrologer!
