RED CROSS TO OOOST FUND DY RADIO PROGRAM Appeal for Cash to Relieve Drought-Stricken to Go on Air Tonight. Tonight at 9:30 the ether waves of Indianapolis and vicinity will clarion a plea for the Red Cross drought relief fund over station WKBF. A musical program, with Meretilth Nicholson, Hoosler author, as master of ceremonies, is being sponsored by Indianapolis newspapers In behalf of drought sufferers in Indiana and the nation. Nineteen Indiana counties now •re being aided by the Red Cross. $72,000 Is City’s Goal With $72,000 as the city’s quota, the Red Cross fund here reached 57,889.85 at noon today, when $1,514 in contributions had been received at headquarters in the World War Memorial building, 77 North Meridian streec Arthur V. Brown, director of the local appeal, and Monsignor Francis H. Gavisk arc among the speakers on tonight's program. Washington reports have it that Secretary Andrew Mellon's resignation will be accepted after congress adjourns March 4, and Robinson is believed to be President Hoover's choice to succeed him.

POLICE DULLET FAILS TO HALT DANDIT GUNMAN Radio Squad Pursues Filling Station Robber, Who Makes Escape. In three holdups early today bandits took $137, and following one job the bandit escaped only after pursuit by a police squad, during which a shot from a policeman’s gun failed to stop the fugitive. The gunman held up Clarence Ophey, 2954 North Gale street, attendant at a Hoosier Pete filling station. Twenty-second street and Capitol avenue, and took Sl7. As Ophey’s alarm was broadcast over police radio. Sergeant Dan Cummings’ squad was parked at Twgpty-first and Illinois streets, where the sergeant had entered a store to report to headquarters. Three patrolmen in the machine heard the description of the bandit and saw a man a block distant, who ran when he noticed the police car. In the chase that followed, near Twenty-second and Illinois streets, Patrolman Harry O’Meara got one shot at the gunman, but missed. A bandit surprised Kenneth
