FOUR MEN ARE HELD IN KILLING OF GIRL USHER Washington Policeman Is One Who Faces Action ' by Grand Jury. By United Prett WASHINGTON, Jan. 16.—Climaxing five days of testimony which delved into the of Beulah Limerick, attractive theater usher and leader of the “Sky High Whoopee Club,’’ who was murdered in her bedroom New Year’s eve, a coroner's jury early today ordered four men held for action by the grand jury in connection with her death. The men are Vernon Limerick, brother of the dead girl; Patrolman Robert Langdon. who paid night visits to the girl; William Paddy, with her frequently, and Richard Reed, who had posed as her husband. William H. Collins, assistant United States attorney, announced none of the men is admissible to bail. They were all taken to the district jail. During the coroner's inquest, about fifty witnesses were called. The home of Beulah, self-styled “whoopee girl,” was pictured as a center of revelry at night, with guests coming and going frequently. Just hefore the coroner’s jury returned its order. Policeman Langdon, who had insisted upon taking the stand and making a voluntary statement, related some incidents that were so unprintable that all the women were warned they had better leave the room. Search for a taxicab driver, said to have been jilted by Beulah, who disappeared from Washington two days after she was found murdered, continued today.

MOUND YIELDS EARLHEUCS Valuable Data on Ancient Race Is Revealed. BY DR. A. R. KELLY, Director, Illinois Archeological Explorations. <By Wire to Science Service) URBANA, 111., Jan. 16.—Valuable data regarding the mound builders of prehistoric America have been obtained at the famous Powell mound on the outskirts of East Pt. Louis. The mound was one of the largest of the Cahokia group, and was most symmetrical, and perfectly preserved. Destruction of the mound by steam shovel was begun during December to provide soil for truck growing. Real estate developments made the price too high for straight purchase and inclusion of the mound in the Cahokia state park, but the University of Illinois has maintained an archeological field party on the site during excavations. It is now shown that the Indian mound was built in successive stages. A unique burial platform inside it was explored carefully by trowel by the archeologists. A remarkable wooden object covered with sheet copper is a relic of a game played in this "region in early times. And thousands of shells show that these mound building Indians had contact with Florida and the Gulf of Mexico.
PARI-MUTUEI BETTING LAW BILLPREPAREO Enactment Would Provide Funds for Building New Fair Grand Stand. State board of agriculture's long search for means of financing a new grand stand at the state fairground would be answered by enactment of the bill introduced today in the legislature to legalize pari-mutuel betting at horse races. The bill was introduced by Representative Charles J. Allardt (Dem., St. Joseph) and referrred to the committee on public morals. Under the measure, horse race promoters would pay to the state board of agriculture $2,500 license fee for each day’s racing, plus 20 cents on et~;h gate admission.

From the pari-mutuel cashier's cages, promoters might retain not to exceed 614 per cent of the wagers as commission. The bill would authorize vihe board of agriculture to have a representative at the track with wide powers of inspecting gate receipts and progress of the wagering. The state’s receipts would go into a “state fair premium” fund to bear expenses of administration of the act and for “any other purpose in connection with the state fair which the board of agriculture may deem desirable.” Heavy fines are provided for promoters violating provisions of the bill. E. J. Barker, secretary of the . board of agriculture, recently exj pressed favor for such a bill, but the [ board is not expected to espouse it openly. Few legislators accord it a chance of enactment.
