Austria, Hungary, France, Belgium, Russia, were Just so many classifications in a card index that was an epitome of the intimate details of Europe’s military organizations. During the World war, the Ger**n spy service was the envy of the Allies. Spies in the pay of Germany rode, or walked across France at Will. Women camp followers drew their pay checks from Berlin. Clandestine wireless plants behind the front line on the French side of the western front worked for hours on end, relaying reports to Wilhelmstrasae. Thoroughness of German spy methods was well exemplified when, on the opening day of war in 1914, the French general ataff found itself without modem maps of the frontier regions. The German general staff, on the contrary, had a complete map of France, every turn in the road, every cross road and hillock. For forty years before the war a German of Leipslg named Karl Baedecker had made the guide books for France. He did it so well that til his French competition withdrew from the Held. Baedecker had sent his engineers all over France 'intil they had an accurate map of every inch of French soil. It was no trouble at all for the German staff to send to Leipslg and obtain the originals which had been checked for accuracy only a few weeks befoxe the war broke out. One of the strange memories of Paris, during the early days of the war, was the Inability of Parisians to get a drink at & case terrace. thousands of her case waiters, ho-! tel servants and household workers were Germans. Os these many were spies, for a case waiter can hear more gossip than any other kind of employe. Hotel porters and room stewards have constant access to waste baskets. But Germany never depended entirely upon Germans to do her work. Mata Hart was a German spy, and she was the former wife of a Dutch army officer without a drop of German blood in her veins. Hundreds of deserters from allied armies turned spies for Germany. It often was easy during the war to obtain traitor spies, for a deserter did not dare to return to his regiment, or to his home, for fear of being shot. Germany then offered him a salary and an easy task and used him until he was caught. During the summer vacations in peace time, Germany always sent a band of young spies over Europe, school boys and girls apparently on a holiday and carrying cameras. When the war broke out, Germany had all the photographs the staff colleges need for instruction purposes. Since the war all frontiers have been guarded and with rising costs, such activities by all governments have been curtailed. But the spies flourish and courts have had many cases of nationals becoming “traitor-spies’ in the pay of foreign governments. N*it: Great Britain's obeerven. economic conditions and social problems at home and abroad. Professor Baerg testified last November before the Fish investigating committee, on Communist activity in this country. Professor Baerg s parents and ancestors were Russian, although he is a native bom American. Admission to the meeting will be by ticket and invitation, sent to persons requesting them at offices of the association , “Employe representation especially is desired,” a bulletin from the office today stated. Eight threeyear directors will be chosen by membership referendum soon to replace those whose terms are expiring, and new officers will be named in February.
