TERMS U. S. DRY ARMY IN STATE AS INADEQUATE' Staff of Agents Entirely Too Small, Declares Charles Britt. BY SHELDON KEY Indiana's present force of dry agents Is inadequate to cope with flagrant violations of the prohibition law in the state and is “entiretoo small” to handle the situation In the sixty counties of the state territory. This statement was made today by Charles Britt, deputy prohibition administrator, who has been stationed in this district slightly more than a week. Britt, who succeeds James O. Browning, acting deputy administrator, states the policy of his men at the present is to trail down the big’’ liquor manufacturer and seller without wasting time on minor violators. "We Haven't the Time’ “While we don’t condone violations of the small bootlegger,” Britt declared today, "we haven’t the time or force to devote our efforts to the “hip pocket’ bootlegger.” "Our objective is the commercial violator and that is the point emphasized by Amos Woodcock, prohibition director, as most important,” Britt said. These statements were made in view of the fact that urgent need for additional agents in Indiana partially will be met if the annual appropriation bill carrying increased funds for the prohibition bureau of the Justice department is passed by congress. That Indiana would receive an allotment from the 500 new prohibition agents provided for in the bill now pending is the opinion of Britt. Conditions Are ‘Bad’ Under the distribution plan proposed by Woodcock, the Seventh district, including Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, would have eighty dry agents added to its forces. Britt further said reports have come to him that there is "a lot of enforcement to be done in Indiana,” and that in some sections of the state conditions are “plenty bad.” It is his plan, he said, to make a trip into the southern part of the state soon to investigate conditions there. The appropriation bill, which has caused a bitter wet and dry fight to flare in congress, carries an appropriation request of $11,369,500 for the bureau of prohibition, an increase of $2,369,500 over last year. LAST RITES SET FOR MRS. MURIEL M’VAY Woman Who Died at Desk in Bank Will Be Buried Friday. Funeral services will be held at 2 Friday for Mrs. Muriel McVay, 37, of 3275 Macpherson avenue, at the Hisey & Titus undertaking establishment. Burial will be in Crown Hill cemetery. Mrs. McVay collapsed and died at her desk in the Washington Bank and Trust Company on Wednesday. Death was due to heart disease. Survivors are three sons, John, Robert and Edward McVay; her mother, Mrs. Florence E. Johnson, and three sisters, Miss I. E. Johnson and Mrs. Harry J. Herff, all of Indianapolis. and Mrs. D. P. Darling, Springfield, Mass. TWO DANCES TO BE HELD City Department Club Women to Sponsor Entertainments. Two 10-cent dances sponsored by the city recreation department and the community women’s clubs will be given Friday night at the Brookside community house and Saturday night- at Municipal Gardens. Man Wounding Officers to Be Returned Today. Having waived extradition, Carl Tate, 28, of 4550 Caroline avenue, will be returned to Indianapolis today by Detective-Sergeant Moitls Corbin, to join two others in Marion county jail for questioning in the shooting of two policemen Jan. 7. Tate was arrested in Washington, D. C., Tuesday night with an Indiana girl with whom he fled the state after the shooting. George Mears and William Thayer now are held in connection with the affray, in which Ferdinand Finchum, patrolman, was wounded seriously, and Owen Tevelin, patrolman, suffered a leg wound. The girl was released In Washington.

FIREMAN HURT FIGHTINGBLAZE $7,500 Damage Is Done to North Side House. Jerry Donohue of the Salvage Corps, was Injured Wednesday night in a fire at the duplex residence of T. A. Moynahan and George B. Gaston, 1465-67 North Delaware street, that caused damage estimated at $7,500. Donohue fell on front steps of the house while aiding in spreading covers to prevent fire and water damage. He was taken to Methodist hospital for treatment of back and leg injuries. George Gaston Jr., heard crackling of the flames while in the residence. The flames destroyed most of the roof and attic of the building.’ Moynahan, owner of the structure, is a contractor, and has erected several apartments in the city. Cause of the fire was not determined. Firemen fought stubborn flames at the Mosier Inn, 2037 North Illinois street, for several hours early today. Sparks caused the fire and damage was estimated at $1,500. Fire of unknown origin caused $l5O damage Wednesday night to the one-story frame residence of Charles Goodwin, 435 South Grace street. ROBBER SENTENCED William Meredith Given Prison Term. William Meredith, bank bandit, accused of participation in five Indiana bank robberies, was sentenced to twenty-five years in state prison in Warren county circuit court Wednesday, E. L. Osborne of the state criminal identification bureau, said today. Meredith was arrested recently in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and returned to Williamsport to face trial for robbery of the Marshfield State bank. SCHOOL TEXTS BILL PREPARED BY BATES Measure Would Provide Printing by State to Reduce Costs. Savings of 50 per cent to persons buying school texts would be afforded, it is claimed, through passage of a bill which Representative Berritt M. Bates (Dem., Marion) expects to introduce today. This measure provides for state control of the printing and binding of the school books. It would have the state board of education advertise for manuscripts for school texts, award the contract for printing and bidding after competitive bids. The state printing board would supervise the printing. If none of the manuscripts submitted are found satisfactory the bill provides that the texts may be purchased as at present. Bates also is preparing a bill regulating sale of patent medicine, Its use and the method of advertising the nostrums. REAL ESTATE BOARD TO DISCUSS PROBLEMS Revision of Barrett Law One of Proposed Topics. Legislative problems of the Indianapolis Real Estate Board will be i discussed at a conference of the board’s committee with Marion county senators and representatives at 3:30 p. m. Friday in the board offices, 821 Lemcke building. Among the matters to come before the committee are revision of the Barrett law to remove penalizing ten years’ interest collections; amending the mechanic’s lien law to provide that owners of real estate be notified by material dealers of delivery of any materials and alro be notified if any contractor or sub-contractor falls to pay at a specified time. Amending of the existing mortgage laws to shorten the redemption period, also Is suggested. Fireman Saves His Own Baby By United Press NEW YORK. BILL SUBMITTED FOR REPEAL OF BONE DRY LAW 30 Other Measures Dumped in Lower House Hopper; Total Reaches 83. Including a measure calling for repeal of the Wright bone dry law, thirty-one bills and three resolutions were dumped on the desk of the clerk of the house of representatives today bringing the total of measures introduced so far in the house to eighty-three. Following various conferences Representative Fred Galloway (Dem., Marlon), presented his repeal measure which, if passe i, would leave prohibition law enforcement in the hands of the federal government, thus permitting the prescription and sale of liquor for medicinal purposes. Although the majority of the today’s bills were purely of local nature, the list Included one for repeal of the state garnishee law, and another requiring that cities and towns provide accident insurance for members of volunteer fire departments. ' Two Amendments Pending Appointment of a Joint committee of six members representing both the house and senate to consider the two pending amendments to the state Constitution, and to report back to the legislature this session, was introduced by Representatives H. H. Evans (Rep., Henry) and Herbert p. Kenney (Dem., Floyd). The two amendments pending are one permitting the legislature to levy an Income tax and the other permits the legislature to prescribe qualifications for admission to the bar. An attempt to bar all persons holding appointive and elective offices from serving in any capacity on committees of political parties is made in a bill Introduced by the four representatives from Lake county. The present law bars such officials from serving on primary election boards. Medicines Considered Regulation of the sale, use and advertisement of patent medicines is sought in a bill introduced by Representative Gerritt Bates (Dem., Marion). Heighth, length and width of motor trucks are perscribed in another proposed statute, which provides that the maximum weight of pneu-matic-tired trucks be 20,000 pounds; solid tires, 16,000 pounds; maximum height, twelve feet; length, thirty feet; width, eight feet, and providing that three red electric lights be shown on the traffic side. 106-Year-Old Russian Dead By United Press NEW YORK, Jan. 15.—Chaim Chayet, Russian born and 106 years old, is dead today probably because he insisted on living in an east side apartment, accessible only by three long flights of stairs. He died of heart failure after climbing the stairs.
