DIETRICH DISPLAYS A GOOD TECHNIQUE BY WALTER D. HICKMAN TTOR a long time we were concerned with the nicely placed puzzle—can ■T Greta Garbo talk? After we found the answer, our next problem Is—Does Marlene Dietrich look and act like Greta. And both answers turn out to be the same, In the affirmative. But I have the Impression that Miss Dietrich is fundamentally from the standpoint of technique a better actress than Miss Garbo. The screen has been hard up for sensational leading women and stars for a long time.
The word “sensational” is not used in the sense of naughty or scandalous. The trouble is, the present day movie star system leaves noth-
ing to the imagination of the fan. We know everything about them including the kind of soap they use in their oath tubs. We like to have mystery to surround our female stars. And so that formula was used to great advantage by and for Miss Garbo. Tt worked for years in favor of Maude Adams, but she was sincere about her desire to be seen
and heard only on the stage. Now they are trying to build up a cloak of mystery about Miss Dietrich. Time only will be able to tell if the director was wise in insisting that she look and act like Greta. In some scenes she exhibited the mannerisms and the slow passionate method of Greta. She is a beauty, no doubt about that. She knows how to put on the so-called passionate scenes. She knows how te dress and walk in those scenes. She probably will come under the heading as the hottest mamma on the talking screen. She has the coldness of Theda Bara, she talks perfect English and above all she knows her way about the movie studio. She does her love making with Gary Cooper and this time Cooper shows that he can act and maintain a sustained characterization. This is supposed to be his starring picture, but the publicity experts really have made him only leading man to a new female star. Adolphe Menjou has a pleasant role this time and being a good guy and certainly on the level with Dietrich, he gets the bad end of the bargain. “Morocco” is another Foreign Legion and desert story. It has been splendidly photographed and directed until the end. The ending is absolutely silly and you will agree with me when you see it. Regardless of anything, it will be Marlene Dietrich and her Greta Garbo ways that will make this picture. Now at the Circle. * * v FARRELL AND GAYNOR ARE UNITED AGAIN They are back together again, hand in hand. One of the most popular teams in movieland, comes forth in an old play called “The Man Who Came Back.” They arc Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor. It seems that an attempt at another “Seventh Heaven” was the object of the director, but it is my opinion that in no way does this measure up to that former success. Farrell and Gaynor are still sweet in tKfcir love scenes, they still make a lovable couple, and I for one am glad to see them together again. The rub in this picture is in the material that is handed out to them.
They axe supposed to be two young people down in the depths, who are struggling against habits that would destroy and min their lives. In plain words the parts are far too heavy for them, and the • result is unrealistic and unconvincing acting. No doubt the director realizing this, made a heavy, morbid theme, into a light
and sweet one. Thus as it stands it is weak and does not ring true. I expect many of those who see this movie will not be bothered about noticing these faults, that I am putting down here, because of the fact that the picture does bring Farreil and Gaynor to them again. In other words just to watch them on the screen will be satisfactory to many. And because of this "Thb Man Who Came Back’* should do well at the box office. Now at the Apollo. By Connell Turpen). XXX WILLIAM HAINES IN A CROOK PICTURE William Haines still is acting .smart, and pulling off silly monkeyshines in Ills new picture, “Remote C o ntrol.” It might easily have been just another Haines picture ut for the goodi direction and the ? * subject material dio announcer vertises for talent allfl amoll £ those Ik applying is the ® leader of a gang William Haines of crooks. John Miljan plays this part very well, and posing as a doctor who deals with the spirit world, he tells people who write to him where to find misplaced articles. By this means he is able to give his gang their instructions over the radio, and they are very successful. It fc‘ when the big job is pulled off that the picture really starts moving. Haines is captured by the gang, and is to be bumped off, on another big job. thus leading the police to think he had been leader of the gang. Just how he escapes being killed is worked up to a thrilling end. I will not tell you here, because that would take the kick out of it, if you go to see it. In support of Haines is Mary Doran. Charles King is in the cast and sings the popular song, “Jrn.t a Little Closer.” Polly Moran hss a small part. “Remote Control” Is interesting and good entertainment because it
brings us something a little different in the way cf crook plays and because it has been well directed in building up suspense. Now at the Palace. fßy Connell Turpen.) LIGHTNER HEADS NEW POLICY SHOW. The Indiana has given up its stage band policy, meaning that Charlie Davis and his orchestra are no longer on the stage but are In the orchestra pit. The unit show policy has been given up for the time being and four vaudeville acts are being billed weekly. The idea Is to have the headliner a name act and the first name is Winnie Lightner. Indianapolis must remember her favorably for her work in ‘The Gold Diggers,” “Life of the Party” and other movies because the Indiana started out with capacity audiences for the first two days of the new policy. She gets her audience the second she walks on. She sings four or five songs and I must admit that she gets her audience easier than she did when she was in George White's “Scandals.” Her songs are light, but it is the Lightner touch that makes them individual. David Harris is given a lot of time to develop his act of “Legerdemain” with Frankie, just a natural eccentric comedian. Harris and Frankie get into all kinds of exposures with their magic. Harris has a cleverly worked out specialty when he turns himself into a one man band. He is aided by a couple of girl singers as well as several dancers. A rag doll dance is splendidly done. Artie Lewis and Peggy Ames go in for a lot of conversation along the wise cracking order. Carlton Emmy and his dogs are well known here on the variety stage. Have always maintained that Emmy has one of the most human dog acts the stage has produced. Helen Twelvetrees in “Her man,” the feature movie, is cast as a girl who was born and raised in a rough dive in Havana. She is rough, tough and a pickpocket, who specializes in male drunks. She is just a rough one until a sailor, played by Philip Holmes, puts romance and a sense of decency into her makeup. Holmes has to put up a real he-man fight with the strong sugar daddy who helped to keep the girl a bum for year? This fight is splendidly handled and directed. And it looks like the real article. The theme of “Her Man” might be termed a modern slum tour of Havana The picture is rich in comedy, furnished by two sailors who play slot machines and drink up gallons of booze. The theme is not uplifting, but does give Miss Twelvetrees a chance do heavier acting than she has been doing on the screen. And that Holmes fellow has the looks and the way about him which should make him a matinee favorite. Now at the Indiana. CONCERNING * * A VIOLINIST Yesterday afternoon Joseph Szigeti, violinist, gave a concert at the Indianapolis Maennerchor that was well worth hearing. He led out 'With Handel’s Sonata in D. Major. In his second number, Beethoven's Sonata in A Major, he proved himself a skilled artist, as did his accompanist, Nikita de Magaloff, at the piano. It almost took as long to play this number as it did the last four numbers of his program. The third part consisted of Largo by Veracini and Rondon by Mozart. In the fourth group in Paganini’s Andante and Caprice in E Major, and Strawinsky's Prelude and Ronde des Princesses, he showed skill in the modem movement of music. To me these two numbers appealed most, because I like the many different tones and colors that flash through them. (By observer.) n a a Mischa Levitzki will appear tonight in a piano recital at Caleb Mills hall as the third offering of the Civic music series. Other theaters today offer: Ruth Roland at the Lyric; “Only Saps Work,” at the Ohio; movies at the Colonial, and burlesque at the Mutual. Legal Notices NOTICE TO BIDDERS!
