BITTER FEUDS CLOUD AIM OF ARMS PARLEY Old Rivalries Add Tension to Coming World Peace Meet. This ts the final article of series on the coming disarmament conference. BY JOSEPH H. BAIRD United Press Staff Correspondent ¶ WASHINGTON, Jan. 8.—The political problems, which have vexed the world since the Versailles treatv remade the map of Europe, must be solved, in part, at least, before the world can abandon its arms, observers here believe. ¶ Regardless of the success of technical experts in working out reduction formulas for use at the proposed world disarmament conference in 1932, these will be futile unless there is a will to peace. ¶ Broadly viewed, the creation of a lasting peace rests on a threefold formula: Security, disarmament, arbitration. ¶ Without security, say France and some other counties, there can be no disarmament. In other quarters, the reverse of this is quoted: Without disarmament there can be no security. Agree With French Some statesmen, agreeing with the French thesis, believe security and later disarmament, can be achieved by treaties binding the nations to consult in the event of trouble. France sought such an agreement at the London naval conference. The United States shied at the proposal, holding it implied the use of force by the signatory nations. Administration quarters have Indicated this country might enter such an agreement if it were clearly stated the obligation was only to consult, not to fight. Thus far, no such pact is in sight Taking a practical view of the coming conference, observers point to a number of danger points on the European map. First, there is the Polish corridor. Under the post-war settlements, Poland was given a long strip of territory through Germany in order to reach the sea. This grant cuts off East Prussia from the rest of Germany. Rees Bright Side The minorities problem in Yugoslavia and Czecho-Slovakia, nevr nations carved out of the old Aus-tro-Hungarian empire, is another source of friction. There is tension between France and Italy. This is caused not only by naval rivalry, but by apparently conflicting aims in North Africa and by Italian resentment over antiFascist plots hatched in France by ex-patriots. Finally, there come rumors, yet unconfirmed, of new European combinations which may divide Europe into two armed camps, as did the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente. On the brighter side of the picture, American observers see a vast improvement in the attitude of nations toward each other around the council tables at Geneva. They find room for optimism too, in the fact that the three largest naval powers apparently have abandoned competition Mother of Eight, Dies By Times Special WESTFIELD, Ind., Jan. LOVE SLAYING CASE SHIFTED Greenfield ‘Triangle’ Trial Is Venued to City. ¶ Greenfield’s sensational love triangle slaying shifted to Marion county courts today when the case of Frank Jordan, 25, alleged slayer of Raymond Cole, 35-year-old husband of Mrs. Marie Cole, was venued to the jurisdiction of Criminal Judge Frank J. Baker. ¶ Jordan is alleged to have shot Cole to death near Greenfield Oct. 31 in order that he might marry Mrs. Cole. The latter will face trial on a murder conspiracy charge in Greenfield Feb. 4 ¶ Jordan, when arraigned recently in Greenfield before Circuit Judge Arthur C. Van Duyn, pleaded not guilty and declared himself a pauper. Both Jordan and Mrs. Cole signed confessions to the murder plot, police say. ¶ Although Baker did not fix a date for trial, it is probable immediate steps will be taken to set the date. Prosecution in the case will be Herbert Wilson, Marion county prosecutor; William E. Bussell, Greenfield state’s attorney, and Milo H. Gray, assistant to Bussell.
