WOMAN BRAVES ARCTIC NIGHT IN SCIENCE WORK Only Member of Her Sex With 10 Explorers Spending Winter in Arctic. From tie darkness of the Arctic night e'er Front Joseff Land bs come the first •lor* of the most extraordinary modern f xolorer In the far north —Nina Riabt-'a-Demme, a 38-year-old woman who 1* spending fiom one to three rears In ‘he Soviet scientific colony of eleven Persons settled in the polar lee wastes. The .ollowlnr dispatch, an almost t-cetlea! record of the experiences of the only white woman ever to Join such an expedition, was transmitted by Miss Hiabtrova-Demme to the United Press bureau in Moscow, via radio to Indigo Ray, thence by letter to the Soviet ice. breaker Mlatel (Snow-Storm) and finally l*y radio to Moscow BY NINA RIABTZOVA DEMME (Copyright. 1931, by United Press) FRANZ JOSEF LAND, Dec. 6. Ia the dead heap of the basalt of this desolate island, man has built • his northernmost laboratory station -the Soviet scientific colony of ten men and myself, the only woman. Human brains have forced a way through the tenacious darkness of the archipelago of the land of Franz Josef. The wind has begun to buzz angrily in the mighty, tightly spread net of radio antenna. The impenetrable darkness of the Arctic night now wraps the islands. Everything has frozen. Only occasionally, especially after a violent aurora borealis, the snow suddenly becomes alive. Together with the wind it rushes furiously over our buildings—buried In the snow t.o their rooftops over ‘he broken ice of the strait, making the black depths of the water. Icebergs Forced Down Under the strong wind pressure icebergs are forced to the bottom, creaking. Blocks of ice are carried away, chasing one another. Inside the station, behind brightly lit windows, are proceeding oui winter preparations for spring. Sleighs and boats are being tested and overhauled. We see sacks, bags, clothing and boots. The human brains which have reached this northern desolation constantly are being sharpened by checking up the results of the au--1 tumn explorations and by reading the many books we brought with us. We study and make comparison:. The extreme north, even now, remains for mankind a hostile anarchic force, where it is Impossible to forecast vagaries of the winds, movements of ice, changes of temperature Remains Hostile Force At any moment these elements may betray, catch in a trap, doom the daring intruders to death. The autumn investigations have supplemented the practical experience of former investigations and now we are considering all minor aspects in greater detail. Out of the eleven of us here, three of us, including myself, are geographers. Our work is being woven into the chain of investigations carried on by our predecessors. Our problem is to find in northern , ature the laws of regularity and narmony between water and land, air, plants, animals; to discover that system of these elements which may be called landscape. I am doing general geographical work, geodetical surveys, studies of the shifting w*ater levels, of the Aurora Borealis and of snow formations. 1 I occupy myself at the same time with ornithological fauna, water fauna and the distribution of plants in groups. As fa.r as the esthetic aspect of the scene is concerned, I am pleased far beyond my expectations.
