Jibbers have Pleasant time ON HOLIDAY EVE Several Good Hauls Made by Bandits; Druggist f Loses $75. It was a happy New Year’s eve for several bandits, but not quite so Jolly for some of their victims. Early in the evening a youth drove into a filling station at Rembrandt street and Indiana avenue, stopped hia car. and asked Leo Ourvitz, 1404 Montcalm street, attendant, for a gallon of gasoline. Ourvitz complied. Then the youth drew a gun and forced Gurvitz to lead the way to the cash register where S3O was abstracted. Escape followed. Two Negroes, one of whom had two automatic pistols, held up J. P. Merrick, 1928 Central avenue, in his drug 6tore at Senate avenue and Vermont street, and looted the cash register of $75, Vem McClain, No. 24, Emily Apts., a customer, was in the store at the time. Taylor stood behind the counter in his drug store at 2061 North Illinois street early in the ;vening when two-well dressed men mtered. “This is a stick-up,’’ one casually remarked. The other herded Miss Virginia Hicks, 201 North Jefferson ivenue, a clerk; Mrs. Rose Webb, 1920 North Meridian street, a cusomer; and Taylor into a corner. The two cash registers in the store gave up $175. Negroes Get SlO Charles Armitage, Rural Route 18, Box 24Q-N, driver of a Gem laundry company truck, was robbed of $lO by two Negroes, he told police. AMOS AND ANDY ARE ‘OVER’ BRITONS’ HEADS j Englishmen Fail to Understand Their Broadcast From America, By United Press LONDON, Jan. I.—Amos ‘n’ Andy, Negro impersonators and fumcus as a radio team, were on tlie air in Great Britain Wednesday, but very few could understand whit they were talking about. The president of the Fresh Air Taxicab Company and the chief chauffeur were heard plainly by 'ens of thousands throughout the British isles, when their program was rebroadcast by British corporations. But their jokes were mostly over the heads of the British, who could not understand the Negor jargon. One group with whom the corre- ' spondent listened in was constantly disturbed by the comment: “I say, what’s wrong? What’s all the jawing about?’’ Which would have left Andy, no doubt, “regusted ” 3REET 1931 FROM PEAK olorado Club Scales Mountain to i Welcome New Year. j -y United Press COLORADO SPRINGS. E. E. Welding Making the Indiana Bell Telephone Company’s footprint in the sands of time is a job something akin to scrubbing an elephant with a toothbrush, but E. E. Welding, supervisor of archives, has the system down pat. He is shown here chalking up 1930 as a year, which among other things, added greatly to his department, in which 1,120 filing cases, 194 sections of shelving and 150 filing cabinets contain 1,800 forms which the public service commission requires the telephone company to preserve.
FEE FIGHT WON BY TREASURER Robinson is Given Right to Collect by Court. The county treasurer can collect 10 cents a mile notification fee and a $1.50 demand fee when notifying delinquent taxpayers of their plight. The money shall go into the personel fund of the treasurer and not intp the county treasury, according to a ruling handed down in superior court one by Judge James M. Leathers late Wednesday. Harry Dunn, county auditor, had sought to enjoin Clyde E. Robinson, county treasurer, from collecting the fees, following a delinquent tax sale on Feb. 10 involving more than 2,500 pieces of property. Until this year the treasurer was entitled to add mileage fee and demand fee to the delinquent taxes before the property was sold. No fee was assessed or collected after the property was sold. The law amended by the 1927 legislature and effective Jan. 1, 1930, permitted the Marion county treasurer to receive only one-third of the 6 per cent commission for collecting delinquent taxes and set out the other two-thirds must revert to the county treasurer along with all fees. Leathers set out the treasurer may collect fees under the 1921 act PLANE USED BY RUM GANG WILL BE SOLD United States Marshal Announces Date for Bids on Ship. Echoes of the Dell Barker airplane liquor conspiracy trial held in the federal court here a month ago were heard today as a result of the notice sent out by Alf O. Meloy, United States marshal for this district, announcing that he will accept bids Jan. 10 for the airplane the gang used. Many cases of liquor were brought here in the plane, which is to be sold to satisfy a fine of $3,000 which was passed on Barker, together with a three years’ sentence. The bids will be received between the hours of 10 a. m. and 4 p. m., Meloy announced HURT IN RIOT OVER HOLIDAY LIQUOR BAN Negro Dance Hall Operator Starts I Searching Guests; Police Called. C. R. General Motors Truck Cos. 31 W. 13th St. “Direct Factory Branch” During the year 1930 we have sold from this branch 205 used trucks. This to us is overwhelming proof of the confidence of the used truck buying public in our merchandise and in our methods of doing business. During this same period of time we have sold 84 used and rebuilt G. M. C.s, proof again that once a G. M. C. is purchased it is rarely ever traded in on some other make of truck, as this shows a percentage of 40% resale to former owners. At present time we have anew selection of excellent used G. M. C.s in practically all capacities, and if you have felt that a G. M. C. has been beyond your reach from a standpoint of investment, come in and. see these trucks now. They will cost you much less than some trucks whose orginally selling price is less. Y. M. A. C. Terms to Responsible Parties.
