HINT ARTIFICIAL CELL MAY LINK LIVING, LIFELESS i Dr. Crile’s Experiment May Prove to Be Aid in Cancer Study. BY DAVID DIETZ Copyright, 1930. by United Press/ CLEVELAND. Dec. 29 —Artificial eiis, brought into existence in the laboratory of Dr. George W. Crile .it Cleveland clinic, may form a •*nk between the lifeless and the living, it was revealed today in an xclusive interview with Dr. Crile. The calls procreated by division as do many living unicellular Mnimals, such as the amoeba, and .ave exhibited reactions to oxygen gnd to poisons similar to that of living cells. Further research may reveal that lg£y are primitive cells resembling we nearly the cells of cancer and |ge throwing Important light :/ ft the study of that disease. , f ’ ,Experiment Is Repeated Blhese facts were revealed today Bien Dr. Crile for the first time jßcussed the work which has been Sng on in Iris laboratory and made Mown details of the experiment, Bws of which leaked out a few Beks ago and was published Rroughout the country as "the arKlicial creation of life.” I‘For the present,” said Dr. Crile, Bt as regard the cell as someBere in the vague ground between Hr lifeless and the living.” Pft r o of Dr. Crile’s assistants regeated the experiment for the Hriter, enabling him to see under Hie microscope the way in which she “autosynthetic cells,” as Dr. |”rile calls them, are formed. Reaction Takes Place W A glass slide with a little depression ground into its center was lilaced under the microscope. In the ■epression was placed a drop of solution containing various salts. To ■his was added a lipoid, a fat, which Biad been extracted from brain 1 issue of a freshly-slaughtered animal. (At once, a reaction between the wo took place, resulting in the ormation of tiny fibers. I The artificial or “autosynthetic” I ell is completed by adding protein irom brain tissue. When this is added, structures ike tiny cells of living creatures, only simpler and more regular in iorm, come ifito existence. Dr. Crile -alls them “autosynthetic” because they put themselves together automatically as the various ingredients arc mixed. Experiments Not Finished "I do not want to say at this nne what the autosynthetic cells I.tre,” Dr. Crile Said. “Our experiments are not finished. If- news had pot leaked out prematurely. I ■would not have discussed this matIrcr for months yet.” The cancer cell is barbaric and Ljorimifcive. Its only function is ■growth at the expense of the other If ells, eventually killing' them off. jf "The autosynthetic cell resembles I'he cancer cell in many ways,” Dr. ■Crie said. “It, too, is a primitive R’ell whose only function is growth.” 1 Dr. Crile expressed the belief that \ iierhaps the formation of the auto- [ synthetic cell could be explained I upon the assumption that living [ tissue contained many complex I molecules. Electrical Fields Cited I These molecules continued to ■exist In the proteins and lipoids ex- J Ftracted from animal brain tissue. | “A salt solution is an electrolyte," j he continued. “Its molecules break J up into electrified particles known : as ions. Hence there are electrical j fields in the solution. “The complex molecules of the i proteins and lipoids arc able by the j electrical energy of the salt solu- i >rion to rearrange themselves into ; ■cell structures. But apparently | I’hese are primitive simple structures lacking the fine detail which long heredity gives to normal living cells.”

Help Wanted Mayor Needs Girl Skilled in Bottle-Tossing to Christen Cruiser.
WANTED—A beautiful damsel, with brains, who can toss a champagne bottle with sufficient accuracy to hit the side cf a battle ship. Apply In person to Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan in the next three months. A COMBINATION of beauty and brains no longer is a serious problem, according to experts, but where is Indianapolis going to find a demure damsel who has had experience enough to toss a bottle? Frankly, it’s the problem of Mayor Sullivan because some time in the next four months he must find a maiden fair to go to Washington with him to christen the United States cruiser Indianapolis. Sullivan is confronted with another problem in that he is a bachelor—under the eligible rating, too. Were he married the entire matter would have been cleared up without further ado. If he hadn’t thought of taking his wife, she would have thought of it for him. ana THE mayor's first contemplation cf the question is taking place in his room at St. Vincent’s hospital. He will be released from there soon, fully recovered from injuries suffered in an airplane accident. “I’ve had a name proposed to me,” nullivan stated. “But I don't even remember who she is. I don’t know how we’ll pick someone for the job. It ought to be a girl who is intelligent and fairly good looking. She must be able to represent the city in gracious manner, as she probably will have te make speeches and things like that.”

BOSTON WILL BE WET ON NEW YEAR’S EVE Police Will Not Disturb Drinkers, But Federal Agent Disagrees. lip United Press BOSTON. Dec. 29.—1f New Year’s eve revelers in Boston are orderly and keep their liquor concealed in hip pockets or under tables Boston police will not disturb them, according to Michael H. Crowley, police superintendent. Jonathan S. Lewis, federal prohibition administrator, however, had other ideas. “I don’t care to comment on what Crowley is going to do,” he said, "but I don't see how a man can take liquor to a banquet or drink it in a hotal without violating the law and we won’t give anyone license to violate the law.” PLANES TO CARRY GOLD Air Conveyance Will Be Used From Mines to Coast in New Guinea. By United Press RABAUL, British New Guinea, Dec. 29.—An air transport company has been formed to carry gold from the rich mines to the coast, it was learned today. Tire airplanes, it was announced, can make the trip in forty minutes, as compared to the eight days it. requires native carriers to force their way through the jungles and swamps and over a 10,000-foot mountain range. The company intends to use trimotored Junkers planes, each of which ■will make two flights daily.

By United Press CHICAGO, Dec. 29.—The Chicago Herald and Examiner estimated today that “the staggering sum of $156,405,500” in public funds was wasted in Cook county (Chicago) during 1930. “For every dollar expended only an average of 60 cents In service has been furnished to the public,” said the paper. “The remainder has been consumed in waste as a result of the inefficient overlapping of government agencies throughout the county. “With no provision for a central check and balance on the 417 separate taxing bodies in the county, they have made of the tax papers’ pocketbook a free-for- all grab ball out of which has been extracted as much as possible without regard for grand totals.” The Herald and Examiner recommended that taxpayers demand simplification of the various governmental bodies of “expect their tax bills to skyrocket higher and higher every year.” Accused of Shooting Wife Police today held Mason Gaines, Negro, 1151 Madera street, on a charge of shooting with intent to kill.
