Kwas merry JAY; NOT ONE WIFE IN SIGHT Boys in ‘Alimony Row’ Really Enjoy ChristmasEven Though in Jail. BY FREDERICK C. OTIIMAN I nitrd Pre* Staff Correspondent CHICAGO. Dec. 26. — Christmas was thoroughly happy for at least 'hirty-five of Chicago's more stubborn citizens. They were in jail. ‘ Where there was absolutely no chance for their wives to bother them,’' observed David Moneypenny, genial warden of the Cook county jail, who presides over “alimony t row,” prison dormitory in which the thirty-five residents spent their holiday in high good humor. • And in peace,” added Moneypenny. “They had a big chicken dinner, played bridge and poker, held a checkers tournament and listened to the new radio set the city provided as sort of a Christ- '' mas present. And Joy Reigned ‘ Just to be certain that Christii..l; in alimony row would be pleasant, we suspended visiting privileges for the day. Not a single divorced wife got a look in.” And joy reigned,” said the warden, who is something of a wit,” ‘ oy reign confined.” The stubborn gentlemen sojourning o pleasantly in jail got in for six months each simply because t hi r v refused to pay their divorced wives alimony. It is the principle of the thing : far as most of them are concerned. And then “alimony row” is a very comfortable place, the food is good and the companionship is comforting. Misery, it seems, loves company. Comfortably Furnished “Alimony row” is a large dormitory in the new' jail. It is furnished wdth comfortable beds, plenty of easy chairs, card tables, and smoking stands. The stubborn gentlemen who inhabit it are accorded privileges which make “alimony row” seem like a first class club, rather than a jail. There would have been thirtysix stubborn gentlemen in “alimony row” Christmas day if it hadn’t been for the second wife of Daniel S. Beebe, wealthy manufacturer, who owes his first wife $24,800 in back alimony. The second Mrs. Beebe obtained S2OO on account Christmas eve, turned it over to Judge John L. Sullivan for the first Mrs. Beebe, and thus won Beebe’s freedom over Christmas. Back to jail he was to go today, unless he settled his account with Mrs. Beebe number one. Keeping ’Em Satisfied Whether his guests want to get out or whether they want to stay in. Warden Moneypenny does his best to keep them satisfied. So he had installed in time for use Thursday a radio loudspeaker system similar to those in the more modern hotels. The system also has a microphone in the warden's office so he may talk to his charges whenever he feels like it. The warden waited until he was sure all the thirty-five customers of “alimony row” were awake before he boomed into the microphone: • Merry Christmas and may they all be as peaceful as this one.” SUGGESTS REVISION IN •CHASTITL’ DEFINITION Attorney Holds “Buggy Ride Kisses’ Ruling of 1884 Obsolete. Bn l ulhd Press NEW YORK, Dec. 26.—Joseph Lonardo, an attorney, announced today he was preparing a bill to be introduced in the state legislature to define what is “chaste character” in a woman. • He said the supreme court ruled in 1884 that a girl who "had gone buggy riding with several men and allowed one of them to kiss her” gave indications of “a great laxity of moral obligations.” “So long as the question Is debatable,” he said, “any designing woman may use the threat of the criminal charge in order to force a cash settlement upon some man in a breach of promise action.” BANK BANDIT SUSPECT HELD TO GRAND JURY Frankfort Man Identified by Wom- * an in Sedalia Holdup Case. THIEF SMASHES CAR; CAPTURED Stolen Auto Driven Into Pole at Terrific Speed. James Burns, 19, Negro, who drove a stolen auto into a utility pole, Christmas afternoon and was captured by volunteer vigilantes after he fled from the wreck uninjured. confessed here today that he is Hillard Lewis of Kokomo, police said. Municipal Judge Paul C. Wetter bound him over to the grand jury on vehicle taking charges, with bail fixed at $4,000. Lewis has served a term in the state reformatory for robbery, he admitted. William A. Atkins of Golden Hill, vice-president of E. C. Atkins & Cos., saw manufacturers, reported the loss of the car, a Cord front drive, from the 4100 block on North Meridian street. Shortly thereafter a police squad saw the car and gave chase. Rounding a curve near Nora, the stolen car skidded, jumped the ditch, crashed through a utility pole and stopped in a field. When the machine stopped, Burns climbed out and ran. Charles R. Wickers of Carmel, Walter Galmore, a fireman at engine house No. 29, and a group of other persons brought to the scene by the crash, chased and captured him. QUICK CHANGE ACT PUT ON MOVIE TITLES So Don’t Judge a Show by Its Name: It Can Be Anything. BY DUANE HENNESSY Lnited Pres* Staff CorresDondent HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 26—Look at the bright lights over a movie theater and the name of the picture will tell you what the public is thinking about.these days, say the people in Hollywood, who have to think up the names. If the public is thinking about romance, the titles are passionate. If mystery is in the public mind, murder or detectives get the break. The studio turns out the pictures here in Hollywood and the sales departments in New York pass upon the names, an executive explained today. The salesmen have to bring in the money, and if a picture has a name that can’t be put over at the box office, off it comes. Getting the Mystery Punch Look at what's happened in the last few months: “The Queen’s Husband” became The Royal Bed.” “Jenny Lind” became “A Lady’s Morals.” “Children of the Street” gave way to “Ladies for Hire.” “The Command to Love" changed to “The. Boudoir Diplomat.” “Second Man” appeared as “He Knew Women.” “Cooking Her Goose” became ‘The Runaway Bride.” As an example of getting the mystery punch into a name last spring when that type of story was at its peak, there is “Hawk Island,” which was changed to “Midnight Mystery.” There are many title changes each year. Here are some examples and the reasons: “Dark Star.” changed to “Min and Bill.” “Dark Star” is too morbid. “Olympia,” changed to “His Glorious Night.” “Olympia” means nothing, and “His Glorious Night” is a good box office title. Really Stuck “The Secretary” will be changed. One picture recently appeared under the name of “Office 'Wife,” killing off “The Secretary” as a title. “Beau Ideal” was to have been changed to “Devil’s Battalion,” but the studio decided that “Beau Ideal,” as a sequel to “Beau Gest,” had better stand. “June Moon,” the “Operetta,” will be changed. The public is tired of musical films and “June Moon” sounds too much of that type. “Typhoon Bill” became “The Derelict.” It may appear strange, but the film producers say that many people would not understand enough about a typhoon to be impressed by the first title. SEARCH IS CONTINUED FOR FALLEN METEOR Phenomenon Causing Earth Shock in Idaho Interests Geologists. By United Press LEWISTON, Idaho., Dec. 26. Central Idaho residents today continued their search for a meteor that flamed across the sky Wednesday night. The detonation as it imbedded itself in the earth was felt in several towns between Colfax and Grangeville and it was believed that it would be found shortly. F. B. Laney, professor of geology at the University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho, confirmed reports that it was a meteor and added that the university was eager to find it for scientific study. The phenomenon occurred at 9:54 Wedensday night and streaked the sky as the coming of a bright dawn.
