NEW HIGH MARX 1 OF PNEUMONIA j DEATHS FEARED Warning Issued Against Letting Self Get jn Run down Condition. By Times Special NEW YORK, Dec. 25.—The number of deaths from penumonia, one of the few communicable diseases thus far escaping medical control, a ain may reach a high total this winter, warns the New York Life Insurance Company, which today reported its experience with this disease during the last ten years; In the first eleven months of this year, pneumonia was responsible for about 7.5 per cent of all deaths o.mong policy-holders and was the fifth greatest cause of death, al--1 period does not include the unfavorable month of December. This compares with a rate of 8.6 per cent for 1929. and 8.7 for 1921. Since 1921 the rates for this disfcase have shown a variance of not rnore than 1.4 per cent. Resistance Is Lowered "Despite the advance in treatment made with the use of a serum injection, pneumonia remains one of the few communicable diseases which in the last ten years has not shown a marked decrease in rate of mortality,” states Dr. Ernest H. Lines, chief medical director of the company. “Examination of the throat and nasal passages of healthy individuals shows that many of us carry with us, more or less constantly, the germs which caused pneumonia. “When we are in good physical condition, the germs are held in check. But when there is a lowering of resistance from undue fatigue, worry, exposure to cold and wet, or from some bodily ailment, the germs have an opportunity to multiply and spread. “This is the season of the year when most people work the hardest, and indulge in the widest social activities. We do not get sufficient fresh air and sleep. “The result is that we are lowering our resistance at the very time we should be most on our guard to withstand the cold and dampness of winter weather. Avoid Run-Down Condition “So it is that the common cold, sore throat and other respiratory infections when contracted, are thrown off only with the greatest difficulty. And it is the common cold, probably more than any other single drain upon our vitality, which is responsible for the onset of pneumonia. “Somebody in the not distant future medical science probably will find a satisfactory preventive or cure for pneumonia. When one confers the extraordinary advances made in controlling smallpox, typhoid, yellow fever, leprosy, malaria, cholera, scarlet fever, diphtheria and many other communicable diseases, this teems a reasonable expectation. “In the meantime it is up to every one of us to avoid a run-down condition and exposure which may lead to pneumonia, if we are to lessen the loss of life attributable to it.” MAN OVERCOME BY GAS IS RECOVERING Leaky Water Heater Results in Near Tragedy to Victim. Overcome with gas escaping from a leaky water heater late Wednesday night in the bathroom at his home, 239 West Thirty-eight street, Walter E. Thornburg, 45, was reported recovering today. Thornburg had been in the room almost an hour when his wife, Mrs. Mary Thornburg, opened the door and found him lying unconscious on the floor. Fire squads in charge of Captain William Hanna and Lieutenant John Kitzmiller, were summoned and Thornburg was revived after first aid treatment. TWO NEGROES HELD IN GROCERY ROBBERY Quiz Pair on Holdup in Which Manager Is Shot. Police today held two Negroes suspected of the robbery of a Standard grocesy at 1419 East Twenty-fifth street Tuesday when Earl Hendricks, manager, suffered a scalp wound in an exchange of shots following the robbery. Arrested Wednesday by Sergeant Michael Morrisey and squad, one of the Negroes is said to have thrown a revolver on a bed in another room as Morrisey entered. The arrest was made after an anonymous phone call to Police Chief Jerry E. Kinney. Muncie Doctor Dies MUNCIE, Ind., Dec. 25.—Dr. Dudley M.
