PRETTY SLAYER FREED ON BOND IN LEGAL TILT Girl, 22, Admits Stabbing Common-Law Mate in ‘Self-Defense.’ Miss Dorothy Jacob, pretty 22-year-oid girl charged with the slaying of her common-law husband in their apartment at 1309 North Pennsylvania street, last August, won her legal tilt for temporary freedom today. After hearing evidence in a petition for a writ of habeas corpus, James D. Ermston, special criminal judge, ordered her immediate release on a $5,000 bond. The gaily dressed girl, whom the state has charged with first degree murder, was present at the hearing this morning to narrate events which, she testified, led her In selfdefense to stab to death Robert J. Morrison, 23, with whom she had lived for almost three years. Self-Defense Claimed Over the objections of Clinton H. Glvan, attorney representing Sheriff George L. Winkler, and George Eggleston, deputy prosecutor, Ermston made his ruling after dickering with defense attorneys on the amount of bond the woman could provide. Ermston first fixed the bond at $7,500, but withdrew his ruling when informed bond in that amount could not be provided. Several professional bondsmen were in the courtroom during the hearing. To the state’s .charge that she slew Morrison because he shunned her love. Miss Jacob testified today the act was committed in self-de-fense. Described Quarrels She described the unlawful life she allegedly led to support Morrison, and the numerous quarrels that followed. On the night preceding the slaying, she testified, Morrison had asked her “to do the impossible.” “He beat me and kicked me so much —it was terrible,” the witness sobbed. “I did everything a woman could do for a man, I had never refused him anything.” After a “beer party” celebrating Morrison's birthday Aug. 9, they quarreled. “He had slapped me after we got home, and I was so afraid of him I got the butcher knife,” she testified. Sobs on Witness Stand ‘‘He ran after me. I tried to lock myself in the bathroom, but he got in. He reached for my throat. 1 was holding the knife in front of me. He fell. It was awful. I pulled the knife out and threw it, I don’t know where, and that is all I remember,” she sobbed tremulously on the stand. Although Eggleston fixed no definite date for trial of the girl, it was indicated the date will be fixed for January.

BAR URGES STATE TO ADOPT UNIFORM LAWS American Association’s Moves Received by Attorney-General Ogden. The American Bar Association’s recommendation tor uniform laws regulating use of firearms; licensing aircraft and airmen; divorce jurisdiction and child labor were received by Attorney-General James M. Ogden today. They were printed in the form of legislative bills and Ogden said he was asked to urge their adoption by the Indiana legislature. Such uniform law's have a fair chance for adoption in a legislature divided politically, and they will receive favorable consideration by the Hoosier legislators, the attorneygeneral believed. The bills were draw'n by the national conference of commissioners 01* uniform state laws and then adopted by the law body. POSTAL LEASE ACCUSATION IS VERIFIED HERE Agents for Senate Group Check Valuation, Rent Paid on Garage. Tax records at the Marion county courthouse today verified the charge made on the floor of the senate Saturday by Senator Blaine of Wisconsin that the postal department is paying an annual rental of $20,100 for the postoffice garage here, valued for assessment at $38,200. The lease for the postoffice garage was acquired from the United Post Offices Corporation, of which Raymond D. Brown is president. Two Investigators Here Activities of that corporation have been under congressional committee investigation for some time and two agents of the committee, Dow Heggy and John G. Holland of Washington, have been here a week checking Brown’s contracts and correspondence. Statements regarding Brown’s operations were carried to the senate by Blaine, who in an attack on the $1,084,000,000 postal appropriation bill charged the postoffice department with awarding leases to favorites without competitive bidding. Brown Denies Charge Blaine said the government was paying exorbitant rentals on 500 buildings and cited a lease for the postoffice garage here. The building, he said, was valued at $37,000, for which the government is paying an annual rental of $20,100. “This lease is in Indianapolis, from which city came powerful political influences, which may explain this favorable lease,” Blaine said. “Senator Blaine is unacquainted with the facts regarding the valuation of the United States postoffice garage here, and his imputations that I have received the postal lease contracts through ‘powerful political influences’ are false,” Brown said today.
