PAVEMENT TORN UP CAUSES HOT BOARDJMTE Safety Group Won’t Cooperate, Says McKinney in Row at City Hall. Controversy flared Thursday night between the works and safety beards over tearing up of new pavement at the recently eliminated jog at Thirtieth street and Washington boulevard The works board, In a letter signed by E. Kirk McKinney, chairman, charged safety department members with “lack of co-opera-tion" in city business. Pavement Cost $2,000 Theory of the works board was that the Gamewell department under control of tile safety board, had torn up the new pavement, laid in the last thirty days at a cost of nearly $2,000, for installation of stop lights. But the safety board had another iheory. Calling in William B. Griffis, Gamewell superintendent, members obtained a statement from him that this was not being done ar.d bis department was not placing or considering placement of lights at the corner. Learning this, the works boa#* then checked records to see if a permit had been granted and the letter had been sent too soon. Records revealed no permit to tear up the street and A. H. Moore, city engineer, said he knew of none. Ground Wire Laid However, Griffis, irate over the charge, investigated and found workmen of the Indianapolis Power* and Light Company had torn up ,Ahe street to repair a grounded wire for the lights along Washington L boulevard. fl The Times also investigated and, talking with the light company orhployes. learned the street lights had gone out Thursday night and the company had torn up the asphalt in four strips about two feet wide to get to its lines. Just what apologetic steps the works board will take are not known. CHILDREN TO BE FETED Railroad Aid Group to Give Party in Pennsy Gym Monday.
