/BROTHERS HOLD U. S. MONOPOLY ' ON JEWSHARPS Tiny Shop in New York Is Only Plant of Kind in Entire Country. By United Preen RENSSELAER, N. Y„ Dec. 12— All the jewsharps made In the United States are produced by the f killful fingers of two brothers. They work In a little rear shop here that scarcely will accommodate five persons. Theirs is a midget industry that nearly grew up when the radio came. But the fad wore off, and now the little shop is not much busier than when it was founded re me twenty-five years ago by their , lather. Even the tools made by John R. Smith to fashion the twanging musical instruments still are in use by his two sons. The elder Smith learned the trade when 15 in England. At 30 he came +■ to the United States and settled in Troy. Eight years later he moved to Rensselaer. Following his death the business passed to his sons, John N. and William. The patterns designed by their father still are copied religiously. The boys are happy in their trade, except for one thing. As William put it: “You are open to embarrassment when attending a party or social affair and someone asks you your occupation and you tell him you make Jewsharps.” While the instruments appear to be simple affairs the work that goes into making them is tedious. The most difficult part is in fitting the little steel tongue so that it produces the proper tone. The Painted desert is a region along the Colorado river in Arizona, remarkable for the bright red, brown, blue, purple, yellow and white colors of its sandstones, clays and shales.
