If money it scarce for buying Christmas toys, parents should buy one or two substantial playthings for their children instead of a quantity of nicknacks and trifles. Not only does one strong plaything give the child lasting pleasure throughout the year, but it teaches him thriftiness and the value of property, while toys that are smashed up on Christmas day stimulate destructive, wasteful habits, in the opinion of Miss Ella

Gardner of the recreation division of the United States children’s bureau. Even If the lWily purse forbids the purchase of toys, a little Ingenuity and materials at hand may provide a happy Christmas for the children. A home-made sand box, for instance, is certain to give its young owner hours of amusement and, moreover, will Insure that he never lacks playmates from the neighborhood. Bean bags and blocks are other enjoyable playthings that every parent can provide. “Blocks may be made at home by cutting a piece of lumber known as a ‘two-by-four* into two-inch lengths and sandpapering the pieces until they are smooth,’’ says a forthcoming edition of “Child Care,” in which the bureau advises parents on the toy problem. “So as not to be too heavy, large blocks may be made like boxes with covers nailed on.” Poor little rich children who receive a bewildering array of toys also deserve the careful thought of their parents, in order that they may get the maximum good out of their many playthings. <aice, the child has a tendency not to appreciate his wealth of belongings or to care for them aa he should learn to do. If the boy is to grow Into a careful property man and the girl Into an efficient home maker, they should commence learning property values In the nursery. When an excess of toys Is the problem, as actually is the case in many families, a good proceeding is to allow the child to choose a few of his favorites for immediate playthings end to hide the others w’ith the understanding that they are in reserve for rainy days and to take the place of those that wear out or break. As further training In thrift and to give the child a sense of order and of his responsibility as a little citizen in the home, a tiny toy shelf should be included in the nursery equipment and the child should be taught to put his toys away when he has finished playing with them. “Toys may be kept in a box, but they are more apt to be broken and the child does not learn to take care of them so well,” is the advice of children’s bureau.

PARK PIONEERS GIVENJRIBUTE Mountain Named for Late Yosemite Worker. By United Pre> WASHINGTON, Dec. 12.—Two men who blazed trails and helped establish the maintenance forces of two national parks have their names perpetuated with a lofty mountain and a winding river. A peak in. the high Sierra, in Yosemite national park, has been named Mt. Lewis in honor of the late W. B. Lewis, superintendent of Yosemite for eleven years, who is credited with the organization of the park’s ranger and maintenance force, the improvement of roads and trails, and the construction of modem buildings in primitive surroundings. The main fork of the Bechler
river, above Three Rivers Junction in Yellowstone national park, bears the name of Williams C.
