SNORTED HOURS ASKED BY RAIL UNION CHIEFS Approved Program Affects K 600.000 Workers in One Industry. lit: United Preen .WASHINGTON, Dec. 11.—The movement lor shorter hours in business and industry, both as a principle and as a means of furnishing increased employment, was extended today to 2,000,000 government and railway workers. Railway union leaders Wednesday night approved the program for . horter hours for the 1,600,000 men in the industry and directed their executive committee to meet with railroad executives to discuss the plan. The union chiefs have been meeting here since Monday. 'rhis was not expected to have an immediate effect on employment, but ultimately, if the program is adopted, addition of more than 100,000 men was considered probable. The American Federation of Labor has begun a campaign to cut down the working week for government employes following a successful fight to reduce hours in private industry. Speaker Longworth of the house is considering a plea by a group of federation officials and house members for immediate action on the McCormick-Jones bill for u Saturday half-holiday for govern* j •nent workers the year round. The measure which has passed the senate would reduce the working week for all by four hours. Some government employes now work forty-eight hours • a week, some forty-four, and some less. The house Wednesday passed a measure for a forty-four-hour week among all postal employes, including railway mail clerks, so that these workers would be eliminated from the McCormick-Jones bill.

JEWS WILL OBSERVE ANCIENT CEREMONY

Hanukkah Services Will Be Held Next Week in Synagogues. Ancient ritualistic observance of the Hanukkah, or Feast of Lights, will be observed In Indianapolis temples and synagogues next week, beginning Sunday. At the Temple Beth El Zedek the first candle will be lighted with the attending ceremony at sundown, between 5 and 6, and a special musical service will be featured. A Hanukkah theme will be the subject of the sermon of Rabbi Milton Steinberg at 8:15 o’clock, Dec. 19, and the regular annual Hanukkah banquet of the congregation will be held the following Sunday night. Hanukkah services will be held Sunday morning, Dec. 14 and 21, at the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation temple, Tenth and Delaware streets. Special services and sermons and music will feature the regular services on the intervering Friday night. Dr. Morris M. Feuerlicht will preach. The Hanukkah Is observed for a period of eight days and commemorates the stand of the Maccabees against the conquering armies of Antiochus Epiphanes, king of Syria, when he attempted to subjugate the Jews. When the Maccabees successfully expelled them from Palestine the ceremony of purifaction Os the Temple from the pullution of the Syrians was held and the period was given over to a contemplation of the deeds of the heroic little band of Jews.
