EXPERIENCE OF GARDNER FIRM STRONG ASSET 58 Years in Sheet Metal Business Is Record of Local Company. When a company honorably has served the people of a community for fifty-eight years, founded by a man who began that service twenty years before, it certainly can be considered a well tried and approved institution. And when, as in this case, three generations of the same family have conducted the institution to success, it is apparent that the family itself has filled a most acceptable place in the business annals of the city. That is the record of the sheet metal house of the Joseph Gardner Company, located at 147-153 Kentucky avenue. Joseph Gardner began the business in 1882, and his son and the latter’s son have-continued its activities. The firm’s specialty is the installation of sheet metal ceilings, skylights, cornices, ventilating device’s. Known Over Country It also is well known as a manufacturer of tanks, chain guards, hoppers and milk cans, and like products. It repairs piping of sheet metal, guttering and down spouting and metal roofs. In fact, wherever the manipulation of sheet metal is required, this company is ready to do the work. Many of its jobs are scattered over the country, from Florida north and the Atlantic coast westward. Large buildings and hotels use its ventilating devices, big factories use its blowpipe work, and its roofing covers many acres of buildings. One reason the company has made such a success is that it always is making an effort to learn the newest uses and methods in the work it does. No Job Too Large With its great fund of experience to draw from, it usually can improve upon any process or structure, and its engineering force does not hesitate to recommend any change from usual methods that will better its work. Ready to tackle a big job, like the covering of the statehouse dome and repair of the roof of that mammoth structure, it also is ready to serve the citizen who needs sheet metal work on his home or in his business. To all it gives the best of service its many years have taught it so well to do. HEATING PLANT CHEGK ADVISED Inspection Helps to Avoid Trouble During Winter. It is an excellent thing, before the winter gets fully under way, to check up on the heating system. A leaky connection, or a valve that may not work, will cause more than enough trouble when winter strikes, and it can be taken care of now with a minimum of attention and inconvenience. The long established firm of L. B. Skinner & Sons has been in the steam heating business for about a thrid of a century, and out of the wealth of experience gleaned in that time is able to help the householder greatly in all questions of repair or readjustment of heating plants, as well as in installation of new plants. The firm is in the plumbing contracting business as well as being heating engineers, and prides itself on the service that has maintained it in business all of this time. It will be pleased to talk over any plumbing or heating problems and Invites householders to call at the office, 518 Massachusetts avenue, or to telephone Lincoln 5019. Many Services Offered Housewives by Laundry

Washing, Ironing, Mending, Darning at Home No Longer Necessary. Organization is a growth, the accumulation of many experiences, classified and ready for present and future application. As in plant life, we find short-lived creations which spring up over night like mushrooms, while others like the lon£lived sturdy oak take many years to attain full growth. So, in business, some firms have a quick, unstable growth and wilt away, while others through years of careful building develop a strong organization and permanent, sturdy leadership. The Best-Grand Laundry. 28 North Senate avenue, represents an organization of the latter type, for it has taken twenty years to put this firm where it is today. The Best-Grand Laundry was built upon the theory that laundry work of necessity is dependent to a large degree upon the human element, and its successful growth in the last twenty years is due largely to its ability in surrounding itself with an organization of efficient and faithful employes and in providing them the most modern equip- ! ment with which to work. Attempt to Please 1 Pride in their work is the uppermost thought in the minds of those employed, and they take finusual pains in trying to please those patrons who are most particular about their laundry work. Thousands of perfectly satisfied customers served regularly prove beyond doubt that their efforts are highly appreciated. “The Wife Saving Station” is a slogan adopted by the Best-Grand laundry, as best befitting its business endeavors. The applicability of the phrase is seen in every one of the six different services originated to meet the requirements of the home manager and save her from the irksome tasks of washing, ironing, mending, sewing on buttons and darning of hosiery. Hosiery Is Darned De Luxe Family Finish—Entire family washing, immaculately clean, perfectly ironed. Starch is used where needed. Missing buttons are replaced, ordinary mending attended to and hosiery darned. This is a complete service, leaving nothing for the customer to bother with. Economy Finished—Entire family wasl Tg, washed and ironed but not star and. This service is proving popu with many customers who want an all-finished service at an economical price. Rough Dry—Everything washed and dried, all table linen, bed linen and towels neatly ironed and folded. Woolens, bath towels and knitted underwear are fluffed, ready for use, leaving only the rest of the wearing apparel to be dampened and ironed when convenient. All pieces that need it are starched. Economy Dry Wash—Everything washed and dried, all table, bed and bath linen ironed and folded, and all other articles fluff dry r d. No starch is used in this serv*„e. Service Is Economical Flat Work—Bundles containing only flat work, bed, table and bath linens. Everything washed, dried, ironed and folded ready for immediate use. Finished Work Priced by the Piece—A service known to many as COMMITTEE TO ADVISE INVESTORS’ RECEIVER Stockholders’ Group Will Aid Joseph in Holding Company Work. Appointment of a stockholders’ committee to advise Jackiel W. Joseph, receiver for the Washington Investors Corporation, holding company for the insolvent Washington Bank and Trust Company, was announced today. Committeemen named include: Samuel E. Rauh. chairman of the board of the Belt Railroad and Stockyards Company; Charles Birely. ShelbyviUe furniture manufacturer; Ira A Minnick. president of the National Dry Kiln Company; Harry De Wolf, of the De Wolf News Company, and J. S. Heintzelman. merchandise manager of L. S. to an exceptional degree of hardness in large cakes. These cakes then are sorted and only those presenting that smooth, crystal-Lke appearance are selected for further operations. These huge cakes then are taken to the cubing machine where whirling saws transform the huge cakes into hundreds of little ones, each practically of the same size and retaining that crystal-like appearance. This operation completed, the cubes are sorted and the perfect ones retained for distribution. Then they are packed in paraffined cartons of three different sizes, twentyfour, forty-eight and seventy-two cube capacity, ready for delivery. A twenty-four hour delivery service to the home is maintained for the cartons, which are sold at exceptionally low prices. Polar ice cubes are ideal for cooling iced tea, lemonade, orangeade and other drinks and have proven much more practical, convenient and economical than chipped ice.

“bundle work” or “bachelor work.” Anything that can be handled in a laundry can be sent in this service. Primarily it is for shirts, collars, underwear, etc., but anything washable can be included. This service guarantees particular care and a prompt return or may be used when the bundle is not large enough to send as family finished. This service, too, includes sewing on buttons, ordinary mending and darning of hosiery. All that is necessary is to pick out the service desired and phone Riley 2555. The Best-Grand laundry will do the rest, satisfactorily and economically^ COMMON COLDS COST MILLIONS Paper Drinking Cups Avoid Spreading of Germs. While it is impossible to determine how much is lost in industry and merchandising each year through the physical ills of people, It has been estimated that the lurking germ that causes the common cold actually costs the people of the United States each year in the neighborhood of $2,000,000,000. That is a larger sum than most people carry around with them for small change in these days, and it Is a direct tax on industry that does no one any good. Some of it can be saved simply. The common drinking cup causes a large percentage of this loss, for It been tried and duly convicted of carrying a large number of respiratory diseases in addition to the cold. Other people’s germs are far from a satisfactory addition to the menu. One’s system has to fight enough of these pests without going to the watercooler and challenging a lot more to get him if they can. There might have been some slight palliation of common drinking cups before the sanitary paper cup made its appearance. Now’ there is none, for Ostermeyer Paper Company of this city maintains not only a complete Frigidaire—Crystal spring water service, but sells the Burt drinking cup, as well, to those who want to stay well. No office, factory or public place should be without these, if only for the protection of the health of the employees. Even if not wishing to use their rental service to get healthful drinking water, business firms may telephone the Ostermeyer Paper Company, 148 Virginia avenue, Ri. 6902, and end the menace to their employes’ health by beginning the use of Burt paper drinking CUDS.

GHEAP GOAL IS POOR ECONOMY FOR CONSUMER Dividends Paid by Use of Good Fuel in Mild or Zero Weather. With winter having displayed a sample of what it can provide in the way of zero weather, householders are beginning to realize the importance of buying only the best coal available for their stoves or furnaces. This is the time when the man w’ho bought good coal is in luck, for ninety-nine times out of 100 he still has a, slow smoldering fire in his heating system in the evening, and it no time at all for him to get the home into a warm, cheerful atmosphere. On the other hand, the man who, probably governed by some idea of false economy, bought cheap fuel, or the man who bought coal from an unscrupulous dealer, w’ho sold him dirt along with his coal, is greeted by a dark interior when he goes to the furnace and open- the door of the fire bowl. Coal Yard Is Paved Invariably cheap coal will not hold fire when the drafts all are closed. The Peoples Coal and Ce- ■ ment Company, with offices at 1109 East Fifteenth street, handles nothing but the best grade of coal. In addition, every yard owned by the company is paved, which guarantees that coal purchased from this firm will be absolutely free from dirt, and W’hen customers have a ton of coal delivered in their bln, they get a ton of good free burning coal and not 1,800 pounds of coal and the remainder of the mount foreign matter. The Peoples Coal and Cement Company has been serving the citizens of this community for the past twenty-seven years, being organized in 1903, and since that time has enjoyed a constant growth. Merit System Used When asked for his rqason for this fact, L. L. Logsdon, president, attributed the reason to the unvarying quality of merchandise handled and the service given customers and the general public. Logsden also stated that to better the service and to assure courteous treatment by the employes of the firm, the merit system was installed by the organization some time ago. "Complaints are earnestly solicited,” Logsden said, “But to date very few have been received. “All drivers are instructed to follow out every desire of the customer when delivering fuel and to leave the premises as clean as it was before the delivery was made.” This coal company handles many grades of coal, and is well equipped to give the buyer the fuel which will be right for his particular heating plant. Two Grades Popular According to the head of the company, the most popular grades of coal during this season, as in the past, have been one marketed under the name of Everglo, and another marketed under the name of Buffalo West Virginia. Both of these grades of fuel are well worth the price. The Everglo coal is an Indiana product, mined from the Indiana fifth vein in Knox county. It all comes from one mine, which insures an even quality throughout. Ali yards of the People’s Company are available by telephone through the main office. There are ample trunk lines which preclude any delay caused by busy signals. Information on coal may be obtained by calling Ch. 4890, with assurance of cheerful and courteous treatment over the wire.
