PUBLICITY STUNT HINT AROUSES AVIATRIX’S IRE Mrs. Keith-Miller Tells of Circumstances Leading to Island Landing. Ii •/ United Press MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 3.—Mrs. J. M. Keith-Miller’s story of circum.stances surrounding her unexpected landing on Ar.dros island in the Bahamas was brought here Tuesday night by John Liggett, one of her fifiancial backers, from Nassau, where he interviewed the Australian flier. Liggett accompanied Captain W. N. Lancaster, Mrs. Keith-Miller’s business representative, to Nassau by plane Tuesday but returned alone. Mrs. Miller gave the following account of her experience: “I am most unhappy about my- . elf. As an experienced flier I feel ashamed to think I failed to reach my objective. “Those who suggested that I might, for publicity purposes, do such a thing, are despicable. I hope my reputation as a sportswoman is • ood enough to refute such as that. Gale Carries Her Off Course 'Contrary to reports, I took off ,ith a favorable weather report, and flew on the compass course which was in absolute conformity for one hour. At the end of that time a terrific gale from the west carried me far to the east. “Visibility was good all the time through heavy storm clouds hung overhead. I went down close to the water to try and check the direction of the wind. It then occurred to me that I might be in the Gulf of Florida. * “Climbing to 7,000 feet I stayed up about five hours until I saw pale green water underneath, so I knew I must be near land. “A haze developed, with squally weather east and west. Two fishing boats were anchored in smooth water below. These I circled, hoping the men on board could indicate the direction to Miami. Wires Were Not Working “The Negro crew did not comprehend, so I just continued my course, : aw land and thought it was Florida, as my map tallied with the surrounding country. “The gas was running low and 1 had to land. I came down without apparent damage. I walked sixteen miles to the telegraph station at Mangrove Cay to let every one know I was sale. “But I found the wires were not working. The sea was too rough for any boat to leave for Nassau, the nearest point of communication, so T had. to delay until the storm abated.” AWARD CONTRACT FOR ARMY POST QUARTERS Indianapolis’ Labor Will Be Used on Job at Ft. Governor Harry G- Leslie issued a proclamation affirming Thursday, Dec. 11, as Indiana day, the anniversary of the state’s admission into the Union in 1816. Her educational system and institutions are the equal of any. Her people are peculiarly American. The counsel of her statesmen is sought by the entire body politic. Her literary genius is a moulding Influence in the literature of the nation. Her philanthropists have done much to uplift humanity.
