General information is that Myers already has twenty-eight votes pledged and needs but ten more to obtain the election. Earl Crawford, Milton, one of the outstanding candidates for the post, was circulating among delegates to the Farm Bureau convention here Monday, drumming up support and is expected to obtain many votes from representatives from rural sections. Perkins Enters Race Two Democratic senators now are in the race for minority floor leader. Letters have been sent out by Chester A. Perkins, South Bend, announcing his candidacy. Walter S. Chambers, Newcastle former state chairman, also is a candidate, and it is expected that the campaigns of these two men may precipitate a wet and dry fight in the Democratic senate ranks Chambers is a dry, w'hile Perkins openly is opposed to prohibition.

that there is “a lot of hooey con- ! r.ected with this business” and demanded a “Christian showdown.” “I asked that man (referring to Arthur) if it were true that my daughter had been taken unconscious from the train on a stretcher, and why they were taking her to the noisy quarters of Angelus temple,” Mrs. Kennedy said. “He denied she had been taken off on a stretcher and also that she was unconscious. Later he turned around and said Sister had been taken from the train in a chair and that she was unconscious. What can I believe?” “Mr. Arthur told me my daughter is in a very serious condition, and yet he said she is receiving no medical attention, and that there are no doctors in attendance. If Aimee is such a sick girl, what is she doing at the Temple and why is she not in a hospital, where she can receive proper care?” Arthur said the high altitudes of the Rocky mountains had affected Mrs. McPherson’s heart. Dr. Edward Huntington Williams, who cared for the evangelist during her recent nervous breakdown, but who has not been called into consultation since her return, belittled Arthur’s statement.

EAST SIDE OF GOTHAM IN GRIP OF WITCHCRAFT Cult of Black Magic Has Fastened Itself on Lives of Thousands. BY lIARRY FERGUSON lnit#d I’rfss Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Nov. 25.—Along the swarming streets of the lower east side, where human beings are crowded closer together than in any other spot in the world, investigators have found the cult of black magic has fastened itself on the lives of thousands of superstitious immigrants. The Bellevue-Yorkville health demonstration commission brought out its report today, and, beneath the mass of statistics, endowments

and operating funds, there was a strange story of how witchcraft is gaining ascendancy in a city which supposedly is one of the most enlightened communities in the new world. In general, the investigators say, the witcherait follows the familiar pattern of “hexes” against enemies, of torture by mental telepathy and of complex powers of the spirits of the upper air who, according to believers, weigh life and death. But this witchcraft, the commission states, has gone farther. It

I has stepped beyond the barriers of race and language—Chinese, Italians, Croats, Czechs and inhabitants of all the Balkan nations, where historians say witchcraft had its origin are involved. Apparently there has growm up a universal language of voodoo among these diversified peoples, and thousands of them are firm in the belief that charms and incantations will cure diseases such as tuberculosis, malignant fevers and other diseases requiring the best of medii cal care.
