Stocks closed with substantial gains in all divisions. The Dow-Jones preliminary industrial average rose 2.77 points to 189.86 and the railroad average rose 2.00 to 111.12. Sales for the day totaled 2.244.610 shares, against 2,626,740 shares Thursday There was considerable irregularity in the first, hour and for a time the market appeared to be on the verge of another reaction. The bull ferecs conquered and forced shorts to cover. The late move in the railroads fol'owsd group advances in the motors, motor equipments, mercantile shares, harvester shares and chemicals. Leading industrials made rev; highs on the movement headed b • United States Steel and Westinghouse Electric. The move in rails was stimulated by several factors, the most important being an analysis by Dowjenes & Cos., saying that the roads in the final quarter should make a much better showing in net operating income, as compared with last year, than they did in the first nine months.

In the Stock Market
(Bv Thomson <fc McKinnon) NEW YORK, Nov. 21.—Reflecting the steady growth of confidence, stocks moved forward quietly, but impressively, with leaders surpassing their former highs of the move. The market was without decided influence from outside developments. Intangible factors continue to be largely responsible for the change in sentiment. Greater stability in grain prices and improvements in the rubber and sugar markets, alongs with the recovery in copper prices abroad, led to the view that general commodity situation has again found its balance. Declaration of certain dividendsabout which there has boen some uncertainty created optimism. The fact that corporation managements are disposed to maintain dividends despite unsatisfactory current earning, and in some cases have gone so far as to give assurance about dividends for next year, served to strengthen confidence in the prospects of futures business. If one may judge from the brokers’ loan account, the security markets are working as nearly on a cash basis as is practical. There can be no other conclusion drawn from the small loan total than that the floating supply of our good securities is constantly decreasing. A revival of speculative interest which an improvised business outlook is almost certain to arouse, should, we believe, result in a higher level of security prices.
In the Cotton Markets
(Bv Thomsen & McKinnon) NEW YORK, Nov. 21.—The cotton market was fractionally lover this morning. There was good support at $11.50 for the May position. We fail to see as much of the buying attributed to the farm board as might be inferred from some trade letters. We think it comes from the trade and is for price fixing purposes. A study of the ginning figures would seem to indicate that with the exception of the state of Mississippi the government may have to raise its final crop figures to some extent. Apparently Mississippi has* been over-estimated. There is nothing in the days news indicating any change in textile conditions. A majority of commission house opinions as gathered from Pearsalls are bullish. NEW ORLEANS —Nov. 21 High. Lot. Close. BULLISH NEWS SENDS FUTURE MART UPWARD Firm Cables and Stronger Buying Movement Add to Strength. By United Press CHICAGO, Nov 21.—With all world markets having a firmer undertone, wheat advanced steadily and sharply on the Board of Trade today in a light trade. Absence of pressure. President Milnor’s statement. the rumored advance of % cent in May basis by the stabilization corporation and strong foreign markets offset the harvesting operations in Argentina and Australia. Profit-taking kept corn prices in check after an early nse. Short, covering in oats at the close advanced that grain sharply At the close wheat was 7 s cent so 1% cents higher, corn was % cent to 1 cent higher and oats were 1\ cents to 2 cents higher. Provisions were uneven, lard being weak and meats firm. Liverpool closed on the upgrade with gains of l 3 s to 1% cents. Winnipeg was around 1 cent higher at midmorning and Buenos Aires was up 1% to Hi cents at mid-day. President Milnor’s statement was to the effect that millers and other user* of wheat could not make forward purchase and was favorably received. Cash prices were unchanged to 4 cent higher. Receipts were eighteen cars. Corn held its major fractional advance at midsession, but the trading was surprisingly quiet. There was heavy buying for western interests early. No news was received. Cash prices were unchanged to 1% cent higher. Receipts were 150 cars. Oats scored an advance of around 1 cent by mid-morning on the strength in the other grains, but had a dull and featureless market. Cash prices were % to 1 cent higher. Receipts were twenty-four cars.
